Should I feel upset and guilty after seeing my parents kill a fruit bat?!
Question: Should I feel upset and guilty after seeing my parents kill a fruit bat?
My parents were too cautious and careless enough to try to go under the net and capture the fruit bat in a bucket, because it had claws. The way the net was set up and knitted over the tree would have been a day job to take it off and put it back on is what they said. My father buried it in the yard and I ended up crying later, and I still feel sad, like I should have stepped up and told them to stop so I could go under the net and try to catch it in a bucket or something and let it go. I know there was a way around it, and it didn't have to die. :(

The bat would feel threatened and unsafe, and if you or your parents tried to catch it, it would have lashed out and attacked. i'll admit your father leaving it to die wasn't a very humane thing to do, but it's gone now so there is nothing we can do. Next time (if ever) it happens, call RSPCA. They deal with bats, and they can come out and catch it for you.
Bats can carry rabies so your parents were protecting you. Life can be harsh at times but the rewards can be great. There are probably billions of bats in the world. Everyday many of those die. What if it had been a poisonous snake? Should your parents kill it?
