I have to get and EEG and MRI and very scared!?!

Question: I have to get and EEG and MRI and very scared!?
I'm almost 13 and just recently got a bad stutter. It's gone but the doctors want to find what caused it. I have to get a MRI and EEG and I'm really scared. What do they do during these, will they hurt? Please help me!

Answers:

I'm 50 and have had both an EEG and a few MRI's (even a C.T. Scan of the head)

The EEG, you just lay on a table, nothing scary, right? They connect a bunch of thingies to you that don't hurt; they don't hurt putting them on (like plungers) and they don't hurt while the machine is on... at all, believe me - this is nothing to be scared of.

The MRI (if you do an "open" MRI it takes 1/2 the time as a closed MRI. The MRI does not hurt in ANY way. What they do is lay you down on a.... thing... (sorry, can't remember the name of it, I have memory loss), and the thing slides into the MRI machine. They will be talking to you from their "booth" to see how you're doin', asking you not to move if you're moving and to breathe steadily to keep you relaxed.

The MRI does not hurt one bit; make a lot of loud stapler-click-like sounds and you'll see some lights, but think of it like teh beginning of Space Mountain at Disneyland - that's what it remainded me of (going through that tube part with all the lights? Except you'll stay in the tube.

The only hard thing about the MRI is that you have to stay relaxed, and because your issue is a stutter, I'm guessing it will be easier for you to relax.

I had a herniated lower lumbar which my body would involuntarily twitch and also a quickly-degenerating C-3 (in my neck), so it was just hard for me to relax because I was in so much pain.

I think you'll do really great with both tests!!! Just don't wear any jewelry at all.

Wishing you health and well-being!! :o))

Do not panic!!!
I recently had an EEG, and it was completely painless, I promise! all you do is sit in a chair while they do all the hard work with the electrodes. Then they do some tests with lights, and thats it. You sit in a chair and do nothing.
I also had a CT scan which is like a shorter MRI scan, and that was completely fine too. You lay on this bed, and it moves and things click above you, and all you do is lie there. I found it fascinating, and again, completely painless. Just make sure you aren't wearing any metal (hairband etc)

Good luck, but I promise they will be completely fine :)

Iv'e been ill lately, had many tests, and those included EEG and CT (similar to MRI)
