How do you tell a parent you want to be on anti depressants?!

Question: How do you tell a parent you want to be on anti depressants?
My mom is bipolar and she has had depression herself, but she doesn't like taking medication. How do I tell her I want to take medication without making it a HUGE deal? I want to bring it up at least semi casually.. So help please?

You first need a correct diagnosis before a psychiatrist will prescribe antidepressants or any other medication that will help you. Your mother needs to know that Bi-Polar is a disease just like Diabetes or Heart Disease and requires the right medications that will allow a person to live a happy and productive life. You don't want to tell your mother that you want antidepressants, you want to tell your mother and describe to her the depression that you are suffering with and that you need help. You can also talk to your school counselor about your depression. They are trained to in a professional way to let your mom know that you need help. Please don't let this go without talking about it with somebody who can help you.

There are numbers that you can call that are staffed by professionals who can help you 24 hours a day with support and information. One is 1-800-273-TALK and 1-800-4ACHILD. That number is for teens also.

Do it in a neutral location such as starbucks or the local park. Bring up that you feel like trying a medication might help you. Ask to see a psychiatrist and give it a fair chance.

You need to be prescribed anti-depressants.
