Addiction is a process, peppermints would be the symptom. I say addiction is a self-centered distortion of perception causing obsessive thinking (peppermints) combined with a physiological compulsion (get them and put them in my mouth, always) to the exclusion of 'normal' healthy aspects of life. "Can't enjoy myself anywhere unless I have enough peppermints with me to last". "Got to get more now faster, NOW!" You see yourself as incomplete or needing whatever your obsession is. Sometimes we obsess because there are problems in life we are unwilling to face. It seems easier to go insane over peppermints than deal with issues like social acceptance, loneliness, feelings of inadequacy, family problems, alcoholism, divorce, whatever. The mind is a funny thing. Addiction is a form of OCD. Many addicts have underlying mental health issues, commonly called co-occuring disorders or Dual-Diagnosis Disorders. I know I do.
