Well there is a law enacted in the USA called the Brady act after Jim Brady whom was shot when Ronald Reagan was president -- so if you are threat of harm to your self or others you can be forced against you will to stay for 72 in a hospital for evaluation and or treatment if needed but this is a slightly difficult process to carry out and public law officers can do what is know as pink slip and this is even more difficult but can happen

Yes, and here is some IMPORTANT advice for you - if they want you to go to the hospital, AGREE. If you don't, and you have psychosis and self injury, they will put you in under an INVOLUNTARY COMMITMENT. This sort of commitment will be on your record forever, and the information will be sent to the FBI to put you in their database as a dangerous person (to prevent you from ever being able to own a firearm). also, under involuntary commitment, you will lose almost all your rights to choose what sort of treatment you will get, and what doctor you will see. the court will choose for you, and if you hate your doctor, you will be stuck with him/her. If you go to the hospital as a voluntary patient, none of this will happen, although in some states you may temporarily lose your firearm rights, which that's ok, you are not doing well anyhow. And hey, there are other rights you might lose under involuntary commitment that I am not aware of, so you just don't want that! People assume you are dangerous, when most people with involuntary commitment are not violent. very unfair.

Get instructions from a therapist on how to stop cutting. a short term thing you can do that is supposed to help is to put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it hard, or to hold an ice cube in your hand until the cold bites (but be careful of frostbite). Make sure your family is aware of what you are doing, and they should see this as a positive sign. You need to learn other ways to cope with emotional problems, but the rubber band and ice cube thing will buy you some time.

all the best.

PS an involuntary commitment is a process where you are in court, have a lawyer, and see a judge. A 72 hour hold is a different thing, where you are held 3 days, not including weekends and holidays, for evaluation. If they want to hold you longer than that, you better agree, or get a good lawyer. most people get public defenders which is of no use at all.

I'm afraid I don't know what laws you have in the United States, my friend, but over here, in the UK, it IS possible for this to happen. Doctors would need to 'section' you under the Mental Health Act. (The 'section' that I mention comes from which section of the Mental Health Act that is used.)

Over here, at least two doctors are needed to assess you and come to an agreement that that is what's required. The most used decisions surround whether or not you are a risk to either yourself or to someone else's safety.

Yes. you can.

But if you want to be happy again and no longer be depressed ( or what ever reason you have for cutting), I think it is a good way to get rid of your addiction!
These people do not do these things just to make your life a hell.
They want to help you get healthy.

I speak from experience as I have overcome depression, anorexia and cutting.
I am still learning, but counseling helped me to get on the right path.

if you were psychotic, you wouldnt know it. but yes you can be sent to the pysch ward against your will if you are a harm to yourself or others. why are you cutting yourself? depression, did something traumatic happen?

Yes, it is. Under the law, if a person is deemed harmful to themselves or others, they can be confined to a psychiatric ward for treatment.

YES. And the bastards can hold you till they see fit, this coming from experience.

Well, yes if you cause threat to anyone's life including yours
