Can mum get a referal to see a psychiatrist whilst in hospital after self harmin!

Question: Can mum get a referal to see a psychiatrist whilst in hospital after self harming?
mum lacerated herself in 50 places today after extreme anxiety. She has just survived but i dont want her released in 1 week without her head being sorted. Will they do anything at hospital or just patch her up and kick her out. Your advice is needed. Thanks

I'm guessing you're in the UK.

Yes, this will be done automatically. Anybody admitted to hospital for mental health reasons (like self harm) will almost certainly need to speak to a psychiatrist before they leave. If the doctors feel she needs more long-term psychiatric input then they will make a referral to the Community Mental Hea;th Team (CMHT). It's automatic and standard practice these days.

I'm a qualified mental health practitioner in the UK

So sorry this has happened to your Mum. She must be really desperate to have harmed herself. Maybe she could see no other way of getting the help she needed. I'm sure you have been really shocked by what has happen. You must take a few days off work/school, because you will be needed to help around the house. You will be needed to be with your Mum. Yes your Mum will be seen by an On- duty- Psychiatrist. I think depending on her situation they will have to keep your mum in for observation. I do not know how long for. I think you may expect at least a Social worker to visit your Home. The Hospital will need to talk to you to see how your Mum will cope at Home. While you are at Home and if alone, get in touch with some relatives for support. If your Grandmother is around, she could be of great support for you. I don't know what other family you have but my Gran was the best. Don't be alone.

Many best wishes to you and yours. Bless you.

Personal.

Depends where you are and what hospital she's in. Speak to her doctors. Once she gets out, speak to her about whether she wants to go to see someone if she's still not okay. You can't make her do anything. Also, she's not just going to be fixed in the space of a week, it takes time, don't expect miracles, recovery is an ongoing process that can be achieved. (Gosh that sounded corny.)

Good luck. :)

As soon as she's medically fit she should be seen by the psych team & assessed. If she's on any medication it may be adjusted. She might be discharged but she's likely to be referred to the community mental health team for support & further treatment. Don't let her slip through the net though, talk to the nurse in charge to ensure support will be available should she be discharged.

hi in the uk??

they will prob let her out once the psychs evaluated her or he may decide to send her to a psych unit from anything from a few days to 28 days

if your mum has been doing this a long time they will prob let her out with a outpatient apt and support from home treatment team /and cpn

who is looking after you ??
best wishes

They give you referrals to psychiatrists and/or psychologist while discharging. Don't worry. She will get referrals.

Experience.

You do not say how old you are, therefore my advice is to talk to the hospital Doctors or any responsible person you feel you can trust about your concerns.

Hope this helps
