Do I have ADD?!? Please help!!?!

Question: Do I have ADD?!? Please help!!?
*I have posted this question more than once, because I am trying to get a lot of opinions and info*

My parents don't think I have it...but I think I may have it. Here are some of my symptoms:

1) I can never focus in school. No matter what class it is, I find myself phasing out and day-dreaming, or just staring into space for no reason. Then I miss instructions. A few times, I have gotten in trouble for not paying attention. If I love the class or hate it, I always phase out. Also, I can't even read a book. 90% of the time, it's almost impossible. Only with a book I truly love, which is rare, I can focus. Sometimes, even with a book I like, I still can't focus.

2) When I'm doing my homework, I also can't concentrate. I always get distracted by minor things. I also have a habit of sitting and doing my homework for about 30 seconds, then I get up and run to my room for no reason at all! I think I just run to my room because it wastes time. I am a horrible procrastinator. Most nights, it takes me 3-4 hours to do homework that should take me 1 hour.

3) I am so unbelievably disorganized. I always lose things, and my room and locker at school are always a mess!

4) I'm kind of a perfectionist. [Not sure if that's a symptom...]. I always have a strange but great memory of random facts.

5) If I'm sitting in class or I'm doing my homework, I can never sit still!

The weird thing is, I'm really smart [not trying to brag or anything]. I'm in a bunch of accelerated classes at my school. I can never pay attention in class, and I just barely get my homework done, yet I manage to get straight A's...

Also, sometimes I can actually focus. Sometimes, I can never focus! It's an on/off thing...

I completely understand the differences between having ADD and just not being interested in something, but SERIOUSLY!! I can almost never focus!!

Please help! What in the world is wrong with me?!

You have moderate to severe Attention Deficit Disorder. It's also possible that you have a form of ADHD. I can't say for sure because I haven't seen you in person, but obviously the facts you've given point to ADD.

Though I honestly believe that you may have been somewhat to majorly influenced by the previous knowledge of ADD and what all it entails. You know, propaganda stuff. So you may really have a form of ADD or ADHD, but who knows how much of it is truly deeply seeded in your mind and how much is just learned behavior.

It's possible. If you're having that much trouble focusing, I'd talk with your doctor about it. They'll be able to help you out, decide if you need some sort of medication to help you focus better, etc. My brother had the same problem for years and my parents refused to believe he had a problem. He spoke to his doctor when he was a teenager and old enough to realize that he was having trouble, his doctor prescribed him something to try, and it really helped him a lot. For others, it doesn't always work. But it's best to consult your doctor :) Good luck!!

You sound exactly like me! I'm in Honors English and History, I'm highly intelligent, and I have ADD. We have all the same "symptoms." It is very common for smart people to have ADD and not realize because it, well, they're smart. You need to get tested by someone who will be very thorough and not diagnose you too quickly. Many people try to get diagnosed with ADD so they can get the medication, so make sure that you actually have it. In terms of not being interested in things, I find that I am able to focus if I'm interested in something, but if I'm not, I get easily distracted. I'm very fidgety as well. There are many ways to deal with ADD, including medication. I started taking something called Vivance. I love reading and I can always focus on books, but it is very common for people with ADD to be unable to do so. Get diagnosed, deal with your issues if it turns out that you have them, and just do the best you can. Having ADD is not a bad thing. It doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you. It just means that you have a different way of thinking.
