Is being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, like being given a deat!

Question: Is being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, like being given a death sentence ?
I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. And I didn't know what it was.. so I had to read about it, and seriously, the judgement that comes with the diagnosis is quite horrible. So is it the same as being given a death sentence or something.. sounds like it is NOT cureable.

So what exactly is BPD and how screwed am I ?

Answers:

Having Borderline Personality Disorder is not a "death sentence", although it might feel that way. But, it is something that needs to be dealt with.

BPD is typically caused by one (or more) traumatic events that happened early in a persons life, which causes problems with their development - such as fears or feelings of inadequacy. It is definitely treatable, but does take a lot of work. A psychologist (as opposed to a psychiatrist) can do a lot of good in helping someone with BPD identify and resolve as much as possible, and learn how to successfully deal with the rest.

No, you're not at all "screwed". With the proper therapy (or counseling) you can lead a very normal and happy life.

Best of luck to you =)

In medical psychiatry, there are at least 16 different personality disorders and sub categories.

The way a human being develops a personality disorder is by being abused and/or neglected in childhood. Because of this, they have learned inappropriate coping skills, ways of thinking and evaluating.

How can it be cured? The patient must find a very good therapist who is willing to work with personality disorders (very few are). The patient must accept the diagnosis and be willing to work with the therapist for several years to learn better coping skills and more appropriate ways of looking at and evaluating events in their lives. This is not impossible to do but it does take one hell of a lot of hard work on the part of the patient and the therapist.

The reason why there is a very low "cure" rate for personality disorders is because most patients refuse to accept their diagnosis and try very hard to excuse and rationalize it away...after all, it is their own personality. And so they think their doctor is "crazy" and other people are trouble makers and they are just fine. And so its very, very hard to get the patient to accept and understand their diagnosis and work hard on getting well.

It's not impossible.
Be well.
I wish you all the best.

The way I look at it is that you are still the same person you were before you were diagnosed. So why should it make any difference now? This diagnostic will not affect your life unless you let it
