my doctor prescribed me xanax for anxiety and paranoia...?!

Question: My doctor prescribed me xanax for anxiety and paranoia...?
Is this common? I hear a lot about how benzodiazepines are highly addictive. They definitely have been helping me sleep, but I'm keeping the dose low, I think.

.5mg in the evening
.25mg before bed.

(been doing this for 4 days, mostly because of a terrible emotional slump. I will visit the doctor again in 10 days to give him results, letting him know if it helped.)

I really don't want to get into a habit, and definitely not a physical addiction. I'm only 18 and I really don't want to be medicated for the rest of my life. What other options could I have? I hope my doctor isn't just giving me chill pills and sending me out.

Thanks for any help or advice.

I was also prescribed something for anxiety but I didn't take it. I have been doing fine without it. It depends how severe your symptoms are, if it's really bad then you will probably continue it. Now it's not like you have to take it for the rest of your life. You can come off it once you feel more confident about doing so.

You are right Benzos CAN be addicting. The main reason your doctor may have prescribed this is for a short term relief of your symptoms. That is exactly what Benzos are for: short term use. The most important thing is for you to find a better/ more effective way of coping with your anxiety.

The best idea would be to get some professional counseling to learn better how to cope with stress and anxiety. Doctors often give these type of meds to help you through until counseling can do more for you.

Doctors are selective on who they prescribe benzo's to. Some doctors give them out rather easily others don't like to.

You seem to be doing it the right way and you should keep it that way. A little time will help.
