Question: Dad in Coma. I'm in waiting room. Need answers.?
im in the waiting room of the icu and my dad is in a coma. i just need to prepare myself a little. im very numb right now-- please dont give me some bullshit sugar coated answer...(sorry for the language)
He's been in a coma since 6am friday 2/11/11. his brain stem is swollen. he's not breathing on his own anymore. his gag reflexes are gone. pupil dilation gone. kidneys failed.
someone please tell me..... what are the chances my dad is brain dead? i know he wouldn't want to be kept on life support for the rest of his life. we may have to make some very difficult decisions soon..

The best people to talk to are the doctors at the hospital who are treating your father. They have a much more intimate knowledge of your dad's condition than anyone on Y!, and have experienced many similar cases in the past.

EDIT: "i mean literally..with all the physical signs. all reflexes gone..what are the chances?"

I'm not certain of the exact chances, but it may be worth waiting until the swelling has died down before making a decision. Odds are that the chances aren't good, but everyone would likely feel much better about making a decision after waiting for more information after the swelling has reduced.

wait and be strong, because miracels happen all the time.
but in the event that he does pass, or just becomes brain dead, if you know that he woulnt want to be kept on life support than you and your family know what to do. His organs can be given to someone whos waiting on a mile high list for a new heart, or another life saving your organ. Give your dad a chance to be save someones life.

if your in the icu, your best bet would be to ask an actual doctor, preferably the one who is treating your dad
i don't have a medical degree...

Awwww sweetie pie im sure your daddy isnt brain dead. He is in a happy place with lots of angels and fairies and lots of chocolate!!!

These kinds of questions can be answered by your dad's doctor.

I never really had a father son relationship with my father.
But please don't be sad.. Be strong.
Try to be .. atleast... :(

Hi Rina,

Sorry to start with the sugar coat but I feel for you. I am a doctor and although not an expert on ICU I can give you some general info. 1/3 of patient in ICU are generally expected to make a full recovery, 1/3 recover with residual problems and 1/3 don't make it. (this is a roughly true for most large ICUs). The longer a patient is in ICU the worse there prospects and as ur father has been in ICU for 12 days things don't look that good for him. The doctors that will be looking after him will use a number of tests to assess his brain including imaging such as MRI and you will have to rely on their guidance. I wish you the best in these difficult times.

Could you tell me his age ? is he is under 40 there is a better chance he will pull through because younger people have a tendency to heal better and there brain will form new paths for functions same with other injuries. I would give him at least 1 month to heal at max 2 months. if you do not see an increase in function or a change in brain stimulation i would suggest you pull the plug. He could pull through just fine tho. or he could regain motor functions and site but not be able to respond like he use to this could mean ( retardation, parolization, and other effects).

My cousin had a simmiler problem. I work in a hospital icu

I feel terrible for you. Just remember that murder is murder. If it comes
To taking your father of life support then all attempts should be made to save your father. You would be killing him if you did any less. This is also a time to think about what happens after this life. Turn to Jesus Christ and you will never regret it.
