I'm not sure if I should see a counsellor...?!

Question: I'm not sure if I should see a counsellor...?
Hi I'm a girl, 15 turning 16 soon. I'm an all around happy person and I love life and God - I'm a Christian. I have quite a few friends. However, I'm pretty shy and sometimes I have trouble talking in front of others, presenting things like for projects (I recently started doing homeschooling but that's not an issue) I'm not ashamed to have a nice, happy sweet soul though :). Once I was trying to share my life testimony at christian camp but I had trouble talking about it and stuff.. I seem to not be able to keep an improvised talk going. I desire to be able to express my opinions, talk and not be scared, etc. I don't want to give people the wrong idea. I want to come off as confident and caring like a leader. My mum and I were thinking of sending me to this local talent agency where they have social graces and drama classes, etc. That sounds fun. Other than that though, when I went to the hospital a couple of months ago (I have had this stomach problem since I was younger) and I had to tell this counselor guy who sees all patients about some of my life and about my mum and how she has something like bi-polar disorder (she's been to the hospital for it and I hope she doesn't have any more outbreaks and gets sick again). He recommended that I see a counselor because he thinks I'm scared of mental health issues. I don't think I am, I just think that I'm concerned for her.. I might even want to be a phycologist one day haha. By the way in the past my mum saw a sec. therapist but she's not anymore and it's not helping.
Some of the hospital staff, in front of my parents recommended that I go to this youth mental health clinic thing. Being a christian, I would rather not see some secular therapists. I had seen a sec. therapist in the past to help me deal with stomach issues, and she even hypnotised me. Later I found out that christians should not participate in that. She talked with me a bit about my mum but it did not go anywhere.
Anyway, if I see a counsellor/physc I want it to be a christian one. What do you think I should do for both of my issues?
Thanks

I think that going to counseling for yourself is a splendid idea. You can stop any time you want, but it may be a good way to get at some of the issues that are bothering you. I'm sure it's possible to find a counselor who is christian, but it may not be as important as you think. A good counselor isn't going to make any issue of your faith. Hopefully you will find someone who is spiritual and accepting. Where I work we have clients who are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Jehovah Witness, Mormon, and more. The staff work well with all of them. The specific faith is only an issue if the client makes it so.

Your instincts on professionals in the field of psychology may be right on. I've met lots that have a very negative view of any Christian faith that teaches absolutes on morality. If you come across someone that don't respect your religion, you should see someone that does.

With that stated, public speaking is the most common fear or anxiety there is. As with the treatment of any anxiety, exposure is the cure. In other words, the more you put yourself in a situation where you speak publicly, the less choking you'll experience. Another tip, speak about things that you know and are true to you. If you are going to share your faith, forget the talking points, and just go with what you know to be important to you. You won't choke on that.

Good luck, and, I don't think you have to have therapy. You can probably go to Borders and find what you need in a self-help book that teaches relaxation, deep breathing, and rational throught.
