How can I get better?!

Question: How can I get better?
I don't know if this has to do with self esteem, but every time I do a paper or take a test or quiz, do a project for school, anything, i automatically think I failed or did terribly. I took a test in English Friday on William Shakespeare. My teacher told us today that she had them graded and in the gradebook and that they're online. I kept thinking that I did really bad on the test and I was worrying all during class. I just looked now and I had gotten a B, which is like an A to me. Why do I keep thinking I fail everything? I usually don't do well on tests and quizzes, I never study. Do you think that's why? Or could it be something else? Also, I don't raise my hand in class. Never. Not unless I'm called on. And even in study hall where there are teachers there to HELP us, I don't raise my hand if I need help. It takes a lot of courage for me to raise my hand in SH or to go up to a teacher and ask a question. I'm afraid I'll be wrong or get yelled at or something. What could be up with me? Thanks! if you need additional info, just ask :)

There could be many reasons why you have automatic negative thoughts. Many of us do. It's great that you notice that these are automatic thoughts and that they are not always true. So you have realized that your negative thoughts are not valid. They are just thoughts, and fears and most of the time, as you have realized by experience, that they do not come true. This is where you can change your way of thinking. Next time you realize you are thinking something negative, switch it up and tell yourself something positive! Think of the good possibilities instead of the bad. Like if the teacher calls on you and you get the answer right, imagine how good you will feel! Also, remember to take small steps. If you are scared to raise your hand...just start out by practicing saying hi to the teacher on your way into class. Or try asking your classmate for help first. Remember that teacher's are there to help. It's their job, and they get paid for it. They have responsibilities too and they are responsible for your learning.

You don't give yourself enough credit. You seem to doubt your abilities. Maybe you expect to dissapoint others and that is why you worry? Raising your hand in class or asking for help is very tough. Everyone is afraid of that - unless they are a know-it-all and have the right answers ALL THE TIME! But showing you have a question puts you in the spotlight and you take a chance. You are normal to be afraid - giving a public speach is one of the biggest fears people have. Some people love the limelight, others, like myself, like to observe from the shadows. Your questions are important because you are so intelligent you get Bs without studying. If you stop asking questions, how will you get smarter? If you START asking questions face to face (not just in your head) you will learn more about yourself and the world and the people around you. Asking someone for their help makes them feel needed. Now, on your end, you have to realize your questions are wasted if you don't ask. What if someone else in your class wanted to know the same thing you did? Neither one of you asks and nobody learns anything. Sometimes you think you know the answer, you could be wrong. But so what, you tried. If you expect yourself to fail you may fail. Study so you have back up instead of hoping you get a decent grade. Studying will give you the info you need and more confidence so you don't stress about grades. You will do better each time (if you study!) which will eventually show you to believe in yourself. You obviously want to learn or it wouldn't bother you not raising your hand in class. Look at it this way, your teacher is there to work because teaching is his/her career choice. So, make your teacher work for you. ASK ASK and ASK some more!!! It is your teachers job to answer and they do not judge you so just put your hand up! You deserve to know all the answers. You may not know about it but you can help a class mate by asking a question THEY wanted to ask but couldn't! You would be surprised at how many of us have felt like you are. You won't get yelled at. You could possibly be wrong about the answer, yes. But you won't get yelled at. There is nothing to be ashamed of for getting the answer wrong. Ignoring your potential by holding yourself back is. Let yourself be free to find out how everything works!
