Can you have similar symptoms of depression for 2 yrs, and not have clinical dep!

Question: Can you have similar symptoms of depression for 2 yrs, and not have clinical depression?
For example, for me:

No motivation to improve self or current situation (I'm failing college courses, and although I care, I don't have the mental energy to fix it)
I mysteriously lost my appetite for a week and lost 5 lbs; I'm eating fine now.
Id rather live in the s*** hole dysfunctional home I live in then try to find something better for myself. Because I feel like I belong here to rot away like everyone else.
My hearing and concentration is screwed up because I'm hyper sensitive.
I have no goals anymore.

I can be content for a few days, then back feeling like crap. I am 21, and sheltered as a child, and being an adult and doing stuff for myself is highly stressful and overwhelming.

Went to a psychologist...no diagnosis. I feel like I can't give a good explanation for my situation...I had an instructor ask what's my problem, and I really couldn't say much.

So can a person have depression symptoms and not have clinical depression? If that makes sense.

Answers:

Yes it makes perfect sense. Possibly, you may have reactive depression, being unhappy where you are, or it may be something as simple as allergies to something you eat or drink. Maybe your body demanded a break from these by your loss of appetite for a week?

You may simply be bored and unfulfilled. The lifestyle imposed on you by society's expectations may not live up to your own! You may be living in a way that goes against your own ideals. You may be the proverbial square peg in a round hole.

It is stressful to fend for yourself after being a sheltered child, but if you try to be organised and keep things simple, you will get used to it slowly and surely. Perhaps you need some time out with your folks?

Try to keep a note of what you eat and drink each day, and how you feel each day - as you say you feel ok for a few days and then feel bad again? You may find some correlation between what you consume and feeling bad. If you're feeling down it may be that you're not bothering to prepare and cook fresh food for yourself - and are making do with chemical-laden ready made meals, and diet type stuff full of artificial sweeteners, colours and flavours? Understandable, but not helpful to your health or state of mind.

You need some help, more than anyone can give you here with such limited knowledge of your circumstances. No one deserves to feel as bad about themselves as you do - you certainly do not deserve to stay in a dysfunctional home, and "rot away like everyone else".

Perhaps you need a hobby, art or craft of some kind - something that would reward you with a sense of achievement and pleasure? Occupational therapy does work. A good walk each day can also help to lift the spirits and get the endorphins going which are your brain's own reward system.

I hope you feel better soon, kindest regards.
