Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times. They have trouble sleeping at night and experience daytime sleepiness. When asleep their brain moves in to REM stage sleep much more rapidly than normal, usually within 10-20 minutes. They can also have cataplexy which involves a sudden loss of muscle tone in response to a strong emotional stimulus. Here's a great video of a narcoleptic dachshund with cataplexy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvMyuZKGK…

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder. It is not caused by mental illness or psychological problems. Bipolar on the other hand IS a psychological disorder, and does not have an obvious neurological cause. People with Bipolar experience two (bi) polar opposite emotions in succession causing them to go very up, then very down. There are other types of bipolar where there ups and downs are less extreme, and rapid cycle bipolar where people go up and down more quickly than normal.

No. Narcolepsy is where people cannot stay awake & seemingly fall asleep at random moments whereas bipolar disorder or manic depression is presented as a person who goes through manic 'high' times & suicidal low times, with no kind of happy medium.
