Became depressed by challenging life circumstances...?!

Question: Became depressed by challenging life circumstances...?
I have lived with my boyfriend in a neighborhood for nearly five years that isn't the greatest because there have been two shootings, there is a lot of graffiti and litter. We have lived there for a while. I also work at a job that is below my skill level for nearly four years.

I am depressed. I wasn't depressed before. Due to the depression, I feel like it is hard to make changes. I am wondering if it is possible to become depressed from life circumstances that aren't the easiest? Does this mean I am clinically depressed? My fear is that if I move, I will still be depressed. What comes first: challenging life circumstances, or depression?

Answers:

Medical science has proven that people who live with constant hardships will become depressed due to their circumstances. Poverty and alack of a secure environment may be what is causing your depression.
If things don't seem to change, get better or if there is no hope, people will become depressed and develop inertia and hopelessness. Its like being a prisoner of war...nothing changes.
And so if I were you, I would get treatment for my depression; probably a short term on anti depression medication. When your depression is regulated, you should think about moving or getting a new opportunity in your life, such as going back to school or volunteering somewhere where your skills will be appreciated.
I wish you all the best.
