i know someone with clinical depression and they think its because grandparents !

Question: I know someone with clinical depression and they think its because grandparents were alcoholics. is this right?
someone that i know was just diagnosed with clinical depression, but her mom thinks that its linked to the fact there is alcoholism on both sides of the family. in multiple researches i have came up empty handed at finding out if clinical depression would be linked to other family members being alcoholics. i had always thought it was an imbalance. it kinda erritates me as well because she has cut her legs up because she doesnt wanna "live" anymore but has now been going around showing everyone these scars or wounds as you may. I think its attention seeking. id always thought that people who try to commit suicide dont want others to know and will do everything in there power to hide the fact. can someone please clearify this for me. thanks

It's far more likely their grand parents were alcoholics because of depression.

Ditto on Jordan's observation. Many alcoholics drink in an effort to self medicate mental ills. The cutting behavior you mention is more apt to be a symptom of an axis two disorder. She can be suffering from both depression and an axis two disorder.
That said, depression is definitely an imbalance [of neurotransmitters] in the brain. There is so much to know about mental health, but one point I always want to make is that most mental health problems respond well. to a healthy diet. Patrick Holford's book "Optimum Nutrition For THe Mind" is a good resource for anyone wishing to read up on the subject.

Have degree in psychology and have studied nutrition for ten years now

I wouldn't worry about why she has depression. I'd just try some treatments. This video might help some.
