Yes..it's possible.

?Sunlight - an hour of direct sun exposure every day if available (morning sun is best as light therapy). Mid-day sun is also good for Vitamin D production.
?Regular human contact. Avoid social isolation.
?Exercise. At least 3x per week, 20 minutes or more at a time. (Increased frequency and duration is even better). Cardiovascular activity is preferable. Martial Arts are one of the best mind/body methods for depression self-help.
?Daily vitamin B-complex - Most Important is B-12. Also B6 and B3 and Folic Acid.
?5,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 (this is much much higher than the usual recommended daily allowance - which is insignificant and non-therapeutic at low levels) according to the information and studies provided by the scientifically based Vitamin D Council . Especially important if you don't get much direct mid-day sunshine.(D2 is toxic at high levels. D3 is safe and is the same as what the body produces when exposed to UV Sunlight).
?A good natural supplement for maximizing optimal functioning and circulation for the brain. Learn more about natural medicine for depression
?Good nutrition: pure foods - organic food whenever possible; minimal sugar, caffeine and preservatives. Avoid alcohol and marijuana. Absolutely do not use amphetamines, cocaine, meth or any other stimulant street drugs.
?Fish Oil for Omega-3 Fatty Acids, taken daily. I recommend Carlson's Fish Oil - it's very high quality and is completely mercury-free, unlike most other fish products. Fish oil is far superior to all other sources of Essential Fatty Acids, including flax seed oil. The cheapest source of Carlson's that I've found is at Vitacost - about 50% less than it costs at my local health food store.
?Keep a journal. Write for yourself, not for anyone else. Don't worry about how it looks, just write what comes without filtering or editing anything. Daily journaling is recommended.

It all depends on the form of depression which one is experiencing.

There are two forms of depression: one that is a situational depression and the other that is a severe major depression.

A situational depression can result from losing something that one felt very close to. It is possible to overcome this without the assistance of a mental health professional.

A severe major depression is a depression which does require the help of someone who is a mental health professional in order to alleviate any of the symptoms that the person is experiencing.

A severe major depression can lead to feelings that are so down that the person may want to commit suicide or even attempt it. The situational depression does not usually result in such a severe degree of depression, but it is also possible that it can deepen to the point of requiring therapy.

If there is any question on that person's part that it is a "situational depression", they might benefit from seeing they general medical doctor who will be able to gauge whether it is a severe major depression or a situational depression and just what he would recommend for treatment (if it is necessary).

You can try, George, in some cases it works. But if it doesn't, please see a doctor. There are many treatments available for depression; you don't need to suffer like this. In the meantime, though, please turn to Psalm 34:18 in your Bible - I find that verse very encouraging. Peace to you, George.

sunshine, good support system, social activities and positive self esteem....
