How Do You Know If Its Depression?!

Question: How Do You Know If Its Depression?
I haven't felt bummed in over a month, and today I just feel miserable.

I lost my athleticism for over a year now, no girls are interested in me, and I lost my great GPA.

I know there are others who have it much worse, but why do I let these things bog me down each time.

I feel like I am a prisoner of my own failures and I don't know how to go back to being the stronger person I used to be.

I just don't think I have it in my anymore and I feel like I have given up even though I haven't.

Is this depression or just a bad day/ bad mindset? I don't want to ask my friends or family this, I feel like they will overreact and think I am suicidal or something stupid.

Thanks if you read all of this, I appreciate it.

Answers:

if it's only one day, then you're fine. i promise (:

you'll know you have depression if every day for weeks, for months, you cant even smile.

it sounds like you just had a bad day, but it's still not great to feel like that at all. try to write these thoughts down on a piece of paper, everything that you hate about yourself, then burn it. as weird as it sounds, seeing your failures shrivel up and disappear is a great feeling.

then write down 3 things you're good at and 2 things that you could be good at.
if you can think of ways to get to those 2 things, then make a plan.

i hope this makes sense, i'm just a silly teenager but i try to help (:

Has there been a period when you felt this way for two weeks or more? Was it enough to interfere with your life?

Even normal people have bad days, and it doesn't matter that others have it worse -- I mean, sometimes bad things happen and if you care, you feel upset about it for a little while. Normal people feel better in a day or two, unless bad stuff keeps happening of course.

I would say "bad day" except that you seem rather worried about it, as if you've had problems in the past. Maybe you could touch base with a school counselor. They might have some helpful things to say, whether it's depression or not. If it becomes a *chronic* problem, then you should seek help. If it's not depression, well, you'll feel better soon and will not have any need to seek help and I don't think you will be worried about it in a few days. :)
