How do I tell if I am depressed?!

Question: How do I tell if I am depressed?
I think I might be depressed but I'd feel like a jerk if I wasted a doctor's time only to find out it's all in my head. I live a fortunate life and have no real reason to be depressed. That may or may not make sense but basically what I would like from you is tell me whether I might be depressed or if I'm some sort of selective hypochondriac. I'm well aware that Yahoo Answers is not replacement for a real doctor. Anyways here's the information I though would be helpful, I'll add additional details if they are requested or I deem them necessary.

Information:
- Depression runs in my family
- I'm a high school age boy
- Over the past few months I've had thoughts of killing myself. I would never do such a thing because among other reasons it would be selfish in that while it may put me to peace it would make life more difficult for those around me (Family etc.). Because I've never given any real thought to the possibility I don't know if it's something I'd actually do if the consequences for others was eliminated.
- With increasing frequency I've been feeling quite worthless.
- I've been having semi controlled break downs where I begin to feel awful so I lie down in my bed and begin to cry and writhe uncontrollebly.

In conclusion I want to emphasize that I have to actual intention of killing myself and am in no other immediate danger so don't answer to "talk me down". Input/Advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest going to a doctor to see what they say. It's kind of a gray area in some places; that's how it happened for me. If you are diagnosed with depression, even if you choose not to take medication or see a shrink for it, its puts you at ease to know for sure. They can also tell you the severity, and whether it can be overcome through mental exercises and therapy. High school is emotionally s***ty, no matter who you are. It's the worst time of your life, and it's only going to improve in the coming years. (PS: If someone's high school experience is "the best time of their life", the rest of their life isn't going anywhere).

Diagnosed with depression in 8th grade. Learned to consciously change negative thoughts to positive ones through brief therapy. Technically I still have depression, but I'm an optimist!

I've suffered from depression since I was twelve years old (I'm 33 now). I didn't get it under control until I was 27. It also runs in my family. Speaking from my experience, it sounds like you definitely do have depression. You don't have to actually be suicidal in order to be depressed -- there's a whole range. You certainly wouldn't be wasting the doctor's time, and he/she might be able to help you. Go ahead and give it a shot. Good luck!
