What's the best way to keep up your spirits when you're unemployed?!

Question: What's the best way to keep up your spirits when you're unemployed?
I've been unemployed for quite a hilw noe and it's come as quite a shock. I never thought I was that vulnerable but this recession has really affected me.

I find myself wasting a lot of time these days. You'd think that after working so long, I'd be enjoying my time off (even if I am worried about my finances). I've spent so many days in the office during my career, thinking 'Oh it would be nice to have today off' but now that it's happening, it's really getting me down. I can't seem to cncentrate on the job search OR enjoying myself. I'm just in a dither all the time (as my grandmother would say).

What are some techniques I can use to calm down and relax a bit?

PS Don't tell me to do anything that costs much money!

Hi - bad luck about your unemployment, please remember it happens to lots of people and try to keep your confidence up. Here are my tips from when it happened to me:

- keep busy: get up, take exercise, keep busy, don't let standards slip eg housework.
- USE THE TIME eg do a DIY project you've meant to do for ages, sort out photos etc
- hang round with 'good' friends not poisonous ones who dent your confidence. Unfortunately this often includes family members...
- remember hunting for work is also a full-time job and treat it as such

I volunteered at an oxfam charity shop. I got food vouchers for lunch which I also used to buy food for supper, and got my pick of the clothes as the other staff encouraged me to take anything that fitted me. It got me out the house and using the time well.

Go to the local convenience store or coffee shop were all the horny housewives hang out after they drop the kids off to school and try to pick one up. That's what I did for the 3 months I was unemployed, was able to bed two of them. One was kinda fat, but a freak in bed. The other was boring.

It is disturbing to not know what your future might hold for you, possibly not being able to find a good job after unemployment.
Maybe it would be good for you to go down unemployment office, or online and join the job corps, and get trained for a better job.
Dont stop trying!

Assuming you're still doggedly pursuing another job, could you not do some volunteer work in the meantime? It's a good CV filler, would get you back into a routine and maybe even teach you some new skills you could go for a paid job with.
