Imaginary life is taking over?!

Question: Imaginary life is taking over?
I created an imaginary world with imaginary people. Most of the things that happen to me there are bad, im hurt and abused constantly, but this guy (who is my imaginary boyfriend) saves me. I live with him because he is my 'tutor'. Its taking over and i can never think about anything else. I cant really complain about my actual life, i have friends, good parents, my self esteem isnt bad, ect... Idk why i even go to this 'place'... Even when im with friends, in my mind, im somewhere else. People notice my spaced-out-ness, and ask whats up. I always just say im tired. Is this bad? I mean, it makes me happy, and when im stressed it helps me relax, so it cant be all bad can it? Even if its bad, i need reasons why its bad. Please help, is it bad, why is it bad, and how to i stop going to it if it IS bad?

Been there, done that; I have this same behavior. You may have what is called Maladaptive Daydreaming. It's a condition that causes excessive, obsessive daydreaming. The daydreaming is often elaborate and detailed, like a book or movie. Take a look at this website:

http://daydreamingdisorder.webs.com/

If you read about this person's behavior on this site, I think that it will sound very familiar to you. There are actually a lot of people with this problem. There are even several forums about it. Here are two:

However, it's important to remember that no one can diagnosis you over the internet. You really have not gone into enough detail to say exactly what is going on. Your best bet may be to talk to your parents, trusted adult, or school counselor about this. Hope this helps.

It aint that bad..honestly,I wush I had that big of an imagination to put up a whole entire beautiful world and I SAY oi f it feels good and helps you relieve stree,go four it

Bad thingd about it-

Youll gradually lose all, sense of reality and wont be able to function well in normal daily social life

If theres bad things going on itll effect you negatively, youll probley end up damaging your proccesing skill and be locked up classified as a schizophrenic .. But nothing goes bad in moderation

Im 13

UNFAIR! I want to be able to create worlds in my head D: All I can make is a giant manatee named Tom that goes "OM NOM NOM NOM"

But nonetheless, it is a little bad for your social life- IF thats really important to you. It should be. So try to make your own life a little more interesting, save your imaginary life for when you're at home alone.

You probably feel bored with your life, and decided that this world is a different one and would give you a more exciting life. Its like that for no apparent reason btw.

I do that too. Well accept my world has no people. It's my escape from people. I don't think it's bad as long as you remember to live your real life as well. If it's just a fun boredom-buster, no harm.

It kinda sounds like maladaptive daydreaming disorder...it's basically an addiction to complex daydreams like that. Look it up.

I do this all the time. Use it and become an author! It can be bad for your social life though. Like you, I'm usually spaced-out. Creating worlds makes me happy though. Try making your life more fun!

you should go to doctor immediately.

my advice is to maybe write a book about the world, that is how most of the worlds
best sellers were created! i used to have a friend who made up a whole friend group
outside of school that weren't real but she said they were. eventually my friend and i
figured it out and we didn't really care but our friend started writing little excerpts of
books she wanted to write one day and they consisted of her imaginary friends. we
actually enjoyed reading them.. she didn't graduate, but she was a really good writer,
she could probably make it as a living.

you can take advantage of your imagination, but the fact that you're abusing yourself
in the thoughts is kinda weird. were you abused at any time of your life or do you
like to be abused? some people are into that kind of stuff, it could be something
you're into.

This is completely normal, I did this too. Its a sign of how a creative mind deals with complex problems, by creating an elaborate imaginary way of working out its confusions. I'm guessing you're going through puberty/adolescense. Your body is producing hormones that cause severe mood swings, your mind is trying to figure out why...its checks all your experience for something that might have upset you but as you said, you have a good life so whats wrong? Your mind doesn't understand that what is happening to you is biological and happens to everyone your age. It begins to make up elaborate situations that would explain why you feel the way you do. The creative mind creates a character that physically suffers from the kind of experiences that it believes would cause you to feel the way you do. The mind finds it simpler to understand things that are physical and in black and white, this helps it process all the emotions you're feeling, in this way, your imaginary world is a form of catharsis (thats a good word, look it up so you'll remember it!) and means that you act out the feelings you're having through and imaginary person rather then losing it and acting these things out in real life! In this way its a very good thing, i still use my little imaginary world all the time! As for the imaginary boyfriend, everyone your age longs for someone who will complete them and save them from the misery of adolescence that they are experiencing.. It is hard to know if girls tend to visualise boys because biologically we recognise that they are our sexual counterparts and we should be attracted towards them or because we are conditioned from childhood to seek a "knight in shining armour'. Either way, it dousn't matter, what you are experiencing is entirely normal, you will one day be very appreciative of your strong imagination and how it helps you deal with life situations. Don't worry about feels distant or unattached to reality, that is also common at your age. Don't be afraid to talk to someone if you feel overwhemed and desperate, your going through an awkward stage we've all been through.
