how to get rid of the urge to self harm?!

Question: How to get rid of the urge to self harm?
I self-harmed for years as a teenager, have been "clean" for 2 years now...

But tonight I have a huge urge to cut myself - and I just don't know how to get rid of these feelings.

What can I do? All my old coping mechanisms aren't working for me tonight....

Why don't you cry instead? Let out all the pain, write it down, make a poem about it, draw a picture, but do something that's not harmful to you or anyone else for your pain. A lot of really negative things or energy can be turned around into something good, meaningful. You can work to try and find an outlet or how you can make this seemingly really bad thing turn into a good thing for you, someone else, or the world. Would you hurt another person? If no, they why would you hurt the person you only really have, yourself.

You may need mood lifting methods. Good mood people do not experience the urge to cut.
The difficulty of medication taken "as needed" is a time problem because every med has a kick in time.
You may need a kick in time estimated 15 -30 minutes. The only (alternative) meds I know about are amino acids and a few herbal teas which may cause a sedation and relaxation. You may try passion flower tea and L-theanine. A better way is a constant low level mood lifting provided by meditation ( but kick in time 4 weeks), walking/jogging/treadmill and a change in food preferring fruits and vegetables.
High dosed walnuts and almonds may work wonders. Papayas, pineapple and avocados are mood
lifting but they are not so quick in action as needed.

The thing you are considering come from deeply suppressed fears that you are not meeting the expectations of yourself or perhaps others. Just remember you are as good as anyone else, you deserve to be happy as much as the next person..but happiness comes from within, not from the validation of others.Turn lose of these old feelings and think of all the good things in your life. And remember SOMEONE loves YOU!! I hope I have helped you understand why hurting is never an acceptable answer. God bless you.

A coping mechanism is to replace bad habits with different habits, so do something else until the urge goes away. Do this everytime you have the urge until it's gone for good. So pick something....I used to count...I know it sounds weird, but I would try to count as high as I could...gave my mind something...nothing really but something else to think about.

Most possibly you are alone or do not have friends. You may be thinking too much about yourself. You have to move out ,have good friends or find out some meaning to life by social service, charity work etc.I am sure you can have a meaningful life.Human life has no meaning at the time of birth. Those people who give it meaning become great.

People who haven't been in your situation don't understand how hard it is not to cut. For me, it's almost like an impulsion. The only way I could not do it is by doing something else that would get my mind off it. Even that most often doesn't work.

I get similar urges. I stop myself by imagining how horrible the scars will look on my skin, how long they will take to heal. How much negative attention they may attract if people notice them. I hope you feel better soon.

Just think about all the people that love you and wouldn't want you to hurt yourself. Was your life better when you self harmed or during you 2 "clean" years? If it helps get your emotions out write in a journal

you should go to doctor immediately.

Pray to Jesus the pain in your life is healed.
