Is Aspergers syndrome associated with an increased risk of psychotic illness (e.g. schizophrenia)?

Thanks for any answers.

Well, 89, with any mental disorder, the stronger or "worse" the main condition, the greater the chances that there will be other conditions -- other mental disorders.

Although it's not probably technically accurate to think of it this way, one could say this is because the damage to the brain, if it is a great deal of damage, can "spill over" to other parts of the brain from the original site to other locations.

That said, however, there is no strong association between Aspergers and schizophrenia. Rather, psychosis is a condition that can pop up independently, and not be related to schizophrenia at all. Even a person with a normal brain can experience a psychotic episode or seem to have psychotic symptoms if under a great deal of stress. It's a "floater," can make you think the person is schizophrenic, but they can snap out of it.

So it may or may not be schizophrenia. Only a doctor can tell.

Everything I have read says that there are many co-morbid conditions that go along with Asperger's Syndrome. This includes schizophrenia, bipolar, ocd, depression etc. Do an internet search on Asperger's and co morbid and you will find many articles linking the above listed disorders.

Have bipolar & Asperger's. Work at University with researchers in Mental Health. Read many medical journals and books on the subject.

No it is not. Aspergers is likely to increase risks of depression as having difficulties with social aspects of life can lead to low self esteem but thats it.

My friends bro has asbergers it's just a form of autism. Your making it sound to complicated.

you should go to doctor immediately.
