complicated psych question, mental health.?!

Question: Complicated psych question, mental health.?
i dont know what to do anymore.

im going to keep this as brief as i can. i have schizoaffective disorder. since i was a kid [im now 21] i have done this thing where i retreat into a world inside of my head when reality gets too tough [schizoaffective also involves depression in case you dont know] and recently it's getting worse and worse, as in im spending less time in reality and more in my 'other world' as i call it.

the thing is atm im actually on double anti psychotics because im changing medications, so im on both of them at the moment because i cant decrease the old one for a bit, so i dont know how that makes sense.

i talked to my psych the other day and she wants to increase the new med [and still not decrease the old one yet] and what scared is that i didn't want to take more meds because i felt guilty that if i took the drugs i would be getting rid of my best friend [in my other world thing].

i dont know what to do.i feel like id be abandoning someone if i take the drugs. it's that real.

I can relate completely - I have schizophrenia and I thoguht there was this little girl that I had to save, when they put me on meds she stopped speaking to me etc. but her last words were help me and it really haunts me to this day, the feeling that i abandoned her to her fate, it is just something that I think we have to learn to live with, I try to focus on the posotives such as how happy my mum is when I can hold a normal conversation with her which i couldnt if I wasn't on meds, or how I am able to study something I really enjoy at uni. But I'll never forget that little girl and I'm glad I wont 'cause that way shes still sorta alive. I hoped I helped, It must be really tough what your going through! x

well that's a tough call...are you happy? thats probably the first question that should be asked. If you are don't take the meds...I believe if you enjoy the world you live in why change it...now if you don't thats a different story. If what you are doing isn't working try something different. Sometimes its hard to say goodbye to friends...but you always make new ones...

Changing medications is always a tricky business, Emma. Your psychiatrist is trying to improve some part of your condition and this transition period seems to be creating some interesting -- or even difficult -- side effects.

It would be useful to know how long you will be on double medications and so how long will you be experiencing things in this way. You could ask your doctor how long this will last.

I would also ask if you can go back on the previous medication if the new one doesn't work for you after a few months.

My personal opinion is, if you have a best friend, that person will always be a part of you, no matter what medication you are on. Don't worry too much about that aspect, okay?

If someone told you that in order for you to feel better, by taking this medication that helps your brain to relax and concentrate better would you take it?

Sure you would.

Have a mental condition is not new. All of us have some form of mental disorder (what is normal anyway). And it's how we learn to cope with issues in life. Some people need help. When an enzyme in the brain is not working -- or not functioning properly -- or the enzyme is not there at all, the medication is needed to bring the brain up to function correctly. You should be happy that the medications can help you in this instance.

Please take what is prescribed by your physician for you. She's trying to help your brain to function correctly. There is no shame in that at all.

I'm sure with the new one you will fill like a new person!
