How do I get over my depression?!

Question: How do I get over my depression?
I am depressed, and have been for some time. I really want to get over it and be happy, but it seems to be impossible. The only way I can go a day without cutting myself is if I don't eat, because I feel like I need to cut myself if I eat. I know that isn't healthy for me, mentally or physically, but it is just the way my brain works. I want to know how I can get over all this guilt and unhappiness, cause it sure isn't fun.

Been there, done that. You probably need a combination of therapy and antidepressants. Look up counselors, therapists, psychologists, etc. in your area (say in the Yellow Pages) and then Google them. Online, you'll find ratings from people they've treated, as well as their specific areas of expertise. There should be at least one or two that specialize specifically in eating disorders and/ or adolescent psychology (I am assuming that you are in your teens). Your next step is to call and ask if they are accepting new patients. The fact that you used the word "guilt" tells me that this depression is not something chemical, but a deeper rooted issue. If you don't have insurance, some practitioners offer a "sliding scale" fee if you don't have the finances to pay full price. Best of luck to you!!

well done on asking.

not to sound like an *** but... diet and exercise.

you can avoid the issue and hope it gets better (drugs)

you can ignore the issue (doesn't do anything)

you can give up (NOT RECOMMENDED)

you can assault the issue, accept that something must be done, tell anyone that may criticize your attempts at betterment to stuff it (including yourself) and do what must be done.

the more you do that makes your life of value the more value your life will have.

your holding back traumatic experiences and need to vent your anger in a positive way, depression and cutting yourself is the result of turning your anger inwards instead of outwards, when you begin to release your negative emotions your brain will change for the better

Have you tried self meditating with drugs and alcohol?

To get over guilt, you simply have to realize that the past is in the past. You shouldnt keep beating yourself up having to deal with a guilty mind all the time.
Whatever you feel guilty about, its done and over with now, so you should try and forget about it, stop worrying about it and just move forward with your life.

Going without eating won't help you. It will just make you feel tired, lazy, ill and probably make you sick, depending on how long you go without eating.
Cutting yourself isn't going to help you with anything. Self harm never does, harming yourself leads to, risking an infection from un sterilized metal and such, depending on how deep you cut, you could even be placing your life on the line.
Cutting is more of a coward way out, in my opinion.

Do this:
Stop cutting. Eat, your body needs food, it relys heavily on nutrients and such, so start eating again.
Get over your guilt. Dont keep living in the past, move on with your life, things change, people grow, problems become forgotten, no point in feeling guilty over something that happened in the past, it just stops you from living your life and moving on.
Finally, get some motivation. Maybe go to school again, start working more, plan a simple goal for yourself, like maybe meet up with one of your friends, or to stop cutting so much. pick a reachable goal though, this way you will become more happy and confident when you reach it :)

Try your best, and if that doesnt help you can always talk to people. Close friends, family, even a doctor will be more then happy to help you out. Socialization is the key to happyness, try talking to them again, im sure you will be feeling a bit cheery-er if you do so. :]

Good luck with everything ^_^
