How can I deal with depression if I don't have money to pay a therapist?!

Question: How can I deal with depression if I don't have money to pay a therapist?
I have times when I get really depressed and I don't
want to do anything just hide in my room and sleep.
After like two weeks I get somewhat better and I have
to do damage control in my life. I have to go to school
make up work or anything I missed and I have to make peace
with my friends so they don't think I was ditching them.
How can I help myself when I have no money to pay for
a therapist? (I'm a 21 year old college student.) This happens
to me regularly.

Answers:

I have spent over ten thousand dollars on a therapist in the last three years and honey I don't think it is worth it

Do this:

Find an exercise that you LOVE to do (I do dance) and do it vigorously three to five times a week or more

Take Omega Three Fish oils (proven to work for depression)

Take St John's Wort (from health food stores) proven to work for depression

Increase your circle if friends and talk more with them

[Even if you can't see a psychologist - a regular doctor can and will treat you for depression and meds DO work]

Many colleges and universities have counseling services on campus, which are available to students at little to no cost. Talking with a counselor may help you better understand and deal with the depression you are experiencing. You may also want to talk with your Doctor to see what he or she would recommend.

Call the Boys Town National Hotline at 1-800-448-3000. We have trained counselors available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Not only can we provide a listening ear, support and advice, but we can also assist in finding resources in your local area. Please take care of yourself and know we are just a phone call away.

Take care,
Counselor AH

If you're in college they likely have a mental services center there, and even if they don't (which is unlikely) you can go to Student Services, someone there should be able to help you. You can join a depression forum online for support as well, which is free.

Not knowing if you are male or female, I am wondering if your hormonal cycle is involved (although men also have hormonal cycles, they are not as frequent). Do these bouts of depression happen for any reason, or completely random? I hope you will add more details soon so we can all get a better picture of what you're experiencing.

Good luck.

a therapist makes suggestions on how to deal with depression, you could do this simply be changing your behaviour and how you look at things that upset you, if you've had traumatic experiences in the past, forget them and move on but develop positive reinforcements that prevent the past from depressing you

Seek the Lord.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
