Dad diagnosed with Bipolar, help...?!

Question: Dad diagnosed with Bipolar, help...?
My dad is bipolar and recently had an "episode" that worried our whole family, today i found out all of the ideas, hopes, and promises placed that he placed in my mind were false and were only part of his imagination... his now being put on his medication again which we thought he was taking but I'm afraid he might do something outrageous such as suicide if things continue... what actions should I take and how should i react to all of this?

Answers:

My son is a bipolar 1. He has been hospitalized many times - really to get his meds correct in a controlled setting and have good counseling. They finally got it right and for the last 4 or so years he has been doing very well. He HAS to take all meds every day and not self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. That is dangerous / deadly when combined with his meds. He has Asperberger's - a high performing autistic. He is graduating high school this year with a regular diploma and starting at a local community college in summer. I am so proud of him. But it has taken 10 years of love and patience and sometimes tough love. You and your family also need a good counselor. Your plate is more than full. for these episodes, don't let it get too far out of hand - feel free to call 911 and explain. They will take him to appropriate care facility. A few big cops and an ambulance does wonders. It is dangerous and a pain in the butt to put him in your car and transport at that time. Let the professionals do it. This is for his own good and yours. You do realize that this is a chemical imbalance that can be corrected for the most part through daily medicine.

Been there so many times. My heart goes out to you.

Knowledge is power, kid. go to various webistes and read up on bipolar. Learn everything you can about it.
Tell him you love him and support. Encourage him to take his meds.
