Bipolar and time off work?!

Question: Bipolar and time off work?
I have been to the doctors and he thinks I may suffer from bipolar disorder and is referring me for further analysis. He signed me off work for a week for unexplained headaches which I have been getting and I have to go back and see him on Monday trouble is how do I now explain to my employer about the depression when he signs me off again on Monday likelihood is he will because I work with children and at the moment I am in no fit state to be there. Also my contract runs out soon and I am worried it won't be renewed due to my mental health and I don't know what to do. My employer is not very understanding and said I had too much time off work when I had a broken ankle I was only off for 9 weeks and my ankle had to be operated on so how on earth is she gonna react to this if I do have bipolar. I need to know my legal rights and any helpful info on dealing with my tricky boss please. Thanks

Answers:

Your employer has no need to know about any type of mental illness you may have. There is still too much stigma associated with mental illness, plus it's no ones business but yours. If you have unexplained headaches and are scheduled to see another doctor then that's all he/she needs to know.

IF you are diagnosed with bipolar don't worry about it. There are plenty of medications to treat it with and you can live a normal life, as long as you take the medications.

Just to stress a point, never tell an employer about your mental health issues. Even in this day and age it's still a 'dirty little secret' for the most part, but people are beginning to understand more.

Hope this helps.

I have bipolar.
