Now that I told about my cutting, what happens next?!

Question: Now that I told about my cutting, what happens next?
I started cutting myself when I was 12 and I ma now 18. Last night I told my father and he is taking me to a doctor to see where we go from there.

But what comes next?
Am I going to be hospitalized? if so, for how long?
Am I going to get pills and just be sent home?
am I going to have to talk about everything to the doctor?
Or am I going to have to see a therapist?

I just want to know what happens once I meet with the doctor. I am just really nervous, and I dont know what to expect, or if I am okay with feeling scared.

Answers:

If you're scared it just signifies you know the significance of your problem and know that you need to stop. That also tells you that you are in the right state of mind and wont be hospitalized. The ONLY time a doctor will have someone put in a hospital is if they say something along the lines of "I dont care. As soon as I get home I'm slitting my wrist. you just watch". Now that is a credible threat of violence obviously and he knows if he releases them they will die, so he would call the hospital to pick them up. If you just say "I've been having thoughts about suicide because I'm sad ..." thats okay. That is what they are there for, to treat those problems.

It will most likely start with them reffering you to a counselor. He will probably also to check ups on you while you go to counseling, maybe weekly or bi weekly. He might start you off on a low dose of anti depressant but its not too likely. More than likely he will refer you to a psychiatrist to get a better understanding of your problem and to decide if you need medication and what kind. Keep going to counseling in this time though. it can take 3 months just to fit in an appointment.

My doctor (first oen i went to) gave me medicine, counselor appointment, a refferal to a psychiatrist, and the information to call if i was feeling suicidal. It was a hospital. I'm sure you will get a paper like this too. And don't worry if you do have to go, its nothing like in the movies. I got to play with playdo and watch Nightmare on elm street while i was there lol :) i'm here if you need me

You will not be hospitalized, and you may or may not get medication, but the medication will not come right away. You will probably be sent to see a psychologist or psychiatrist and they will ask you everything. They will ask you easy questions, they will ask you personal questions that may make you uncomfortable, but they are doing their job, which is to make you feel better. But in order to do that they need to get to the bottom, find the root cause, and go from there.

The dr may ask you some brief questions, but ultimately will refer you to a psych. They may put you on medications if they deem it necessary.

You get help. You probably won't need hospitalization. If you're depressed you might be given some kind of medication, but maybe not. It would probably be a good idea to see a therapist, they could help you understand your problem and find a way of eliminating your "need" to cut. It's hard to say for sure, what happens is up to you, your father, and your doctor... but none of it is anything to worry about. Try not to be nervous, this is just the first step to recovery.

I think it depends on the severity of it.

if I may ask, how did you tell him? Like, how did you bring it up?
