Should I continue attending therapy?!

Question: Should I continue attending therapy?
I am in college and having been in treatment for depression for the past year and a half. I have been on and off of 3 medications, and have not experienced any lasting improvement. Overall, and for the last few months especially, going to counseling has only served to turn what are typically joyless days into truly miserable ones. I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about dumping my therapist, reciting the final interaction repeatedly in my mind.

With counseling causing me more emotional hardship than any benefit I have received, is it time that I move on and perhaps examine other treatment options?

Thank you for your time...

I suggest to you that the problem may very well be your therapist. The relationship between therapist and patient is a tricky one. You need the therapist to really understand your point of view and general outlook on life. Without that it's difficult for the patient to really find good use of their opinions since they are not really tied to you as much as they should.

I suggest finding a new therapist and don't be afraid to tell your therapist how you feel. They should certainly understand that while their education and observations are valuable it is difficult for you to relate to them making each session more of a lecture from them and something isn't helping you.

It may take a few different therapists but I'm sure you'll find that the doctors would agree that a patient should really feel comfortable and be able to really trust the therapist with all their secrets. Otherwise what help is it really doing the patient.

Good luck. I hope I've helped.

I am experiencing the same issue. I have been in therapy for nearly 3 years and I feel sooo much worse. Sometimes it's like digging up dead bones and only makes you relive things that are better off staying buried. I am going to stop going to therapy and get close to God again. I became a Christian years ago and was close to God for about 8 years and doing really well until a circumstance made me angry at God and I became self destructive. I know the the answer for me is to return to God and stop complaining to my therapist. It is always good to help others too. Go with your gut feeling. It sounds like the days you see your therapist are your worst and when you don't see your therapist you are thinking about negative things to tell your therapist which reinforces your problems even more.

Try to find a new therapist. If this one's just making you feel worse, then you shouldn't go there. There has to be a special bond between the therapist and patient, and you obviously haven't found it here. But don't give up, just keep trying.

Personal experience.

it may be time to try a different therapist. Continue going, it will get worse before it gets better.

why stick with something if it isnt working?

Ya know, not everyone needs to see a therapist even though they may be taking medications for mental illness. You do need to see the doctor who prescribes your meds, but just because you take these meds for your own problems it doesn't mean you have to be reminded by a therapist about why you're taking them.

I learned that the hard way when I thought I was required to see a therapist simply because I was/am under a doctor's care. Since I stopped going to the therapist I have done MUCH better. To me, and it's just my opinion, a therapist is a complete waste of time. I don't need to tell anyone all about my daily activities or how I feel. What I have done in the last several years is to get online and talk about my troubles with others who have the same troubles as I do. They are my therapists.

But you have to decide what's best for you. If you don't like your therapist you can either see another or just stop seeing one at all.

Hope this helps.

Just my experiences with therapists.
