I have a fear of outer space and the unknown, how common is this?!

Question: I have a fear of outer space and the unknown, how common is this?
Does it make any sense to have a fear of not knowing the truth of the universe. I have a fear of the unknown in the universe. I fear things like comets hitting the earth, or the universe collapsing, or the sun doing something that could destroy life as we know it. I realize I have no control, and my fear is irrational in a sense because I would have no control if something happened. I also have fear when I think about all the galaxies and planets out there that could have life. It makes me nervous. I try and think that instead of it being a scary thing, it is a beautiful thing. There is so much we don't know. I do still have moments where I get nervous. How common is this fear? I also feel a sense of claustrophobia on this earth because there is so much tension on our planet, and it is hard to say where things are going with governments, and earthquakes. I feel totally engulfed. I am in counseling, and have shared these thoughts with a counselor. I am just wondering how common a fear of space and the universe is. Thanks.

Answers:

I fear the earth and how big it is. I live in Australia so if I think "that way is north" I think of how far all the other countries are in that direction and it freaks me out. I fear the earth falling from its orbit, I fear outer space and what it all means, why is it there etc.? I fear being sucked into the sky (a certain tv show created the fear, wish I hadn't seen it) and I hate heights as it is. I fear some invisible force will push me up or in some other direction. I fear how isolated the earth seems in relation to how enormous the universe apparently is.

When I get these crazy thoughts it makes it all feel very surreal and I get very fidgety. I've had many phobias and anxiety (agoraphobia, panic disorder, social anxiety) though so this is just a phase I'm going through, an existential crisis of some sort, I imagine.

If I'm home I can calm myself by snuggling under the covers of my bed. =(

ah.. You're thinking too much. There's another things more fun to be concerned. Just forget about all that things. Everything will be fine in its own way, so just dont worry be happy :)

Well just think it out. It makes no sense to worry about stuff u have no control over. Its just a waste of energy. Just focus on things u can control.
