Guilt is eating me alive. Help?!

Question: Guilt is eating me alive. Help?
Im 13... and for some reason i made a bad decision and shoplifted some expensive sunglasses. I got away with it but they made my pockets look huge so i hid them under the seat in the car. Of course my little bratty sister finds them and announces. I found someones sunglasses! And shows them to my dad. I grabbed them really quick and said those are mine. He saw the tag on them.. when we got home he says "emily come here for a second." and ask me where i got those sunglasses. I told him i found them at school. He didnt buy it and he just said, emily tell me the truth. I saw the tag on them and these are probably 300 dollar sunglasses. So i started crying and told him. He seemed dissapointed but he said he wont tell my mom or anything. He is gonna sneak into the store and put them back. He gave me a lecture about how I shouldnt do that. I know what I did was wrong and its just a life lesson but i still dont feel good... I know its gonna be fixed and ill never do it again but still... I feel like crying every 3 minutes. In like 10 years will i look back on this and laugh? Or will this guilt never leave? HELP.

Answers:

yes, it will leave eventually. i used to hang out with some girls who did that and i didn't exactly say no when they got things for me and i even did it myself once. i felt a little bad, but you know what makes you feel better? donate something to charity. the big tsunami in japan just happened, that would be a good cause. it doesnt have to be the 300 dollars, you didnt even get to keep the sunglasses anyway. but giving to people less fortunate than you will make you feel like a good person. if that doesn't work, think about how much damage was actually done to that store. nothing really, right? the top people at those stores are making a killing. and your dad took the sunglasses back, so nobody is suffering for your one little mistake. =)

I think its just something silly you did, you no you wont do it again so theres nothing to worry about, be mature about it and laugh it off, its not that bad your dad put them back right ? i wouldnt worry, it will probs go in a week or so x
best of luck

You won't have learned anything without real consequences, and your father is a big enabler. In 10 years you'll see this as something you did because you knew you could get away with it, and you'll wish you'd been raised better.

You'll get over it after a while. But the shock of the lesson learned was probably good for the quality of your character in the future.

Tell your dad to just mail them back to the store without a return address .The last thing you need is for him to get arrested when he tries to return them.
Tell your dad you are ok with him telling your mother what you have done if he wants to and that you want to be punished for what you did.For example you could do extra work around the house or babysit until you have earned 300 dollars and give it to charity. You are feeling guilty because you dragged your father into this and are making him lie to your mother ,and since he is covering for you he feels he can't punish you without your mother knowing which also is bad.Even if he decides it's best not to tell your mother, earn the money and give it away, then you will feel that you have done something to correct the mistake you made and make your father proud that you are his daughter.

Hey, relax. It's ok. Everything will work out and be fine. Sneaking the sunglasses back isn't a very good idea though. If you really, truly want your guilt gone bring them and your dad to the store manager and explain what you did and what happened. Most likely they'll understand. You'll be alright. I promise, trust me. Just take it easy and accept whatever punishment they give. Come clean and you'll be a better person. Everyone makes mistakes, it's just a good thing you're not older and you won't go to jail for this. You're a good person, goodluck :)
