Do I have trichotillomania? PLEASE answer!?!

Question: Do I have trichotillomania? PLEASE answer!?
For those that don't know, trichotillomania is the compulsive and irresistable urge to pull hair out on parts of the body.

Well anyway, about me:

I have these little damaged hairs near my scalp. I like feeling the texture of them, and they just feel interesting to me. I don't like them on my head since they stick out, so I pluck them or cut them close to the root, I only do this to the hairs on my head, no where else. Also, I would never pull out my normal, non damaged hair in like a huge clump. I absolutely love my hair and I wouldn't want to lose it. I prefer to cut the damaged little hairs than pull them because that way they can grow back faster.

I can resist the urge, but I don't like it. I have really bad will power. Before this started (it started a few days ago) I used to always touch my hair a lot, smooth it down, etc.

I have anxiety, and I have off and on OCD. I also have Hypochondria, so maybe this is a result of that.

What do you think?

Answers:

Hello. I had Trich,, and i definitely do not think that's what you're dealing with. I think what you have is more like ocd. I use to pull out my hair until i had big bald spots. Just playing with your hair, or plucking short ones out, so they won't stick out, Is not really what happens with trichotillomania. When you get the urge to do that, you have to learn to replace that behavior with something else. One thing i've learned about anxiety and ocd is that it is mind over matter, and you have to retrain your way of thinking. It's hard at first, but once you start doing a lot, it gets much easier. I wish you the best. take care :-)

I think absolutely some anxiety issues are causing you distress. I am not qualified to say what you have but as a person with OCD it is obvious you are in some distress and need some help with this. Best to talk to a doctor or health care professional to alleviate some of the stress your suffering. Good luck with this!

Most likely stems from an anxiety disorder. Most compulsions/obsessions do. Treat your anxiety, maybe distract yourself with something else for a while while you are finding something to treat your anxiety so you don't pull your hair out.
