I think my father is bipolar?!

Question: I think my father is bipolar?
It's like one minute, he'll be extremely upset.. and he puts his anger on other people and talks crazy.. like he called my older sister a b*tch (She wasn't around), then started talking about how some people don't care about him. He takes an inhaler, because he recently had trouble breathing.. and I asked him did he take it. He just blew off at me, "Why do you keep asking me that? I'm not supposed to take that everyday!" I was like, "Well nobody else will ask you but me." Then he started talking about my older sister and how she wont ask him.. I was left confused.. she had nothing to do with the conversation. But 15 minutes later.. he was happy again, and started talking with me about music. My dad does this on a daily basis.. one little thing happens.. and he blows off at everybody. It seriously sounds like he is bipolar. What should I do for him?

Answers:

Honestly, labels aren't going to matter much especially if your Dad isn't ready to seek help.

He's the one who needs it, but you are also the one experiencing his problems, so you might consider seeking therapy for yourself first and hope that he gets the hint from your lead.

Another thing you guys can do as a family is look to support groups, especially if there are some locally that are there for stress relief or general anxiety like meditation groups or even music therapy groups.

Do a search for resources in your community, and if that doesn't work try calling 211.

That really does sound like Bipolar disorder. I'm not really sure exactly what you could do, but maybe one day you could tell him 'dad, you know that i care about you and it scares me when you get mad at little things'

something like that, i'm no expert but i think that is how i would approach this situation..

Best Wishes and I hope everything works out ok and he gets better!
Perhaps he could have high blood pressure? Sometimes that can actually cause people to be edgy.

Upon reading your post the first thing that hit me was some sort of addiction, rather than Bipolar.
Especially about the 'anger' part. that tends to be brewing right under the surface of people who are alcoholic or drug-addicted. He may be a functional alcoholic??
Have you asked your mom about his erratic behavior and what she thinks?
