Why are people so quick to try to diagnose people?!

Question: Why are people so quick to try to diagnose people?
I'm a psychiatric nurse and it amazes me the amount of people I come across who think they have or someone else has a mental illness just because they feel a bit off. The amount of people I come across who think they have a personality disorder or especially bipolar disorder just amazes me. If you actually met someone with one of these conditions you would see just how serious they are and would realise that you're actually quite normal!

Is it because they hear about these things on TV so there's more awareness? Or are people so keen these days to fit into this stereotype of 'normal' that if they have a bad day or feel a bit off then they think there's something wrong?

Answers:

I think some of it is just kids who feel alienated but I know what your saying. The ones who just suddenly think they are mentally ill I think actually haven't had enough bad days and they suddenly think the world is ending because nothing is going there way. For me, someone who has barely managed to keep a friend, still a virgin at 28, shown little to no communication skills, little if no concentration, disorganized thinking, mental blankness, and have to force myself to care about everything in my whole life, I feel like there is definitely an issue and still no one has come close to diagnosing me.

well, I don't think i'm bi-polar either but these things also make it hard to even start a relationship. And when people say "oh there is help out there, you should get some", its not like you go and someone gives you a drug that makes it all better. The pain just continues and maybe if your lucky you find a doctor good enough at listening to maybe give you some pointers to deal with the pain, not get rid of it, but live with it. Soon your so beaten down you don't even want to talk anymore

I think that it is because most people are misinformed and scared at the same time. For example, all most people know about being bipolar is that they have mood swings. Most people have that overly dramatized image of mental illness. Many think that if they are diagnosed with a mental illness, their lives are over. The average human is scared of illness, you will se a lot of people freaking out and think they have cancer when they see a lump somewhere.. or when a year ago someone sneezing would think they have h1n1..... I do think the media and society is a big part of it

I agree. Can you do me a huge favor, I know you've gone to school and have learned greatly about the inner workings of the mind, but I know from direct experience that this book is far more effective than medication or therapy alone. I hope very much that you will do this, it is very important to your evolution, there is a way out of human suffering, and there is only one way out, it is called Enlightenment. The sages asked the Buddha what is Enlightenment, all he could answer is this " the end of suffering ".
Please, go and buy the book "A New Earth" by Ecart Tolle. It will change your life forever.

People these days like to have something wrong with them. It's either cutting, schizo, anorexia bulimia. They think it's cool. It's all the teens talk about.
