My school counselor suggested I use the "rubber band method" to prevent myself from cutting. In a nutshell, you put a rubber band around your wrist and whenever you have the urge to self-harm, you snap it. However, I asked my psychologist about the rubber band method, and she disliked the idea. Although snapping a rubber band may feel like a safer method to cutting, it's still considered a form of self-injury and may be a sign that the emotions or stressors contributing to your desire to hurt yourself are still bothering you.
It's all about applying positive coping skills. I found this to be extremely helpful:

-- If you feel angry try getting your emotions out by punching a pillow, releasing some energy out through exercise or dance, or ripping some paper.
-- If you feel numb and cutting is a way to feel something, try other ways to stimulate your senses — eat something spicy, hold an ice cube against your skin (briefly), or take a hot shower. Snapping a rubber band is also a way to feel something, although keep in mind that this is still inflicting pain and possibly causing your bruising.
-- If you need to calm down, try taking a bath, going for a walk, listening to music that soothes you, or meditating.
-- If you cut because you want to see blood, try the methods mentioned above or try drawing a red line where you might normally cut yourself.

I agree with Mary. Give the antidepressants a try. You just started a few days ago, and the antidepressants take a month or so to fully kick in.

Good luck!

keep giving the antidepressants a try. In the mean time you can try a local hotline and if you don't have one of those you can call the national suicide hotline. (do a web search)Yes, I understand that wanting to cut does not mean you want to kill yourself. they are able to talk about other things and may give you ideas of what to try to keep your mind off of cutting or at least put it off. I believe most of the pelople that take the calls are voluteers, but where I live (st. louis) they have to have a certain level of education in social work, etc, in order to field these calls.

mental patient that calls the hotline on near a daily basis

You must stay on the antidepressants every time that you need to take them or else they don't work. Second seriously find someone who can make you stop, for you are cutting more than just yourself. My friend used to do that, but after we talked for a good long time we found a way for her to cope ( which was playing cards) just do something to keep your mind off cutting yourself!

I used to cut constantly, it was my way to let my problems out. I was once at your point too, wanting to cut very badly. But I will tell you, you CAN stop cutting for good. It's been almost a year and a half since I have and it feels great. What I did when I tried to stop, it I'd do the rubber band thing. Snap my wrist with it and it helped me with it for the time being.

But what honestly helps the most is just talking, many people say that but it's true. If you ever want to talk to someone who's been in your shoes, feel free to message me. And also, give your antidepressants some time to kick in, it usually takes a week or two. You could also try to keep busy, in order to distract yourself, and try to stay around someone.

I hope this helps you at all, and stay strong! 2 months is great, you've come so far, it'll get easier. Believe me.

Used to cut.
