Is this a mental illness?!

Question: Is this a mental illness?
I find that when I first meet people or only known them for a small amount of time, that I am perfectly fine. No social awkwardness at all, and I have complete control of myself. However, once I get to know people for a long period of time I get a little awkward around them. I'm not as "alert" as to what I say around them, so I act before I think. I find that I let my guard down.

How do I change this? Because I've lost some VERY good people as friends, they just think I'm weird. I don't know if this is a medical condition that can be treated. Is there anything that can be done to obtain these "lost friendships"? Finally, whatever it is I feel like it is the root for almost all of the major problems that occur in my life.. And honestly, I'm getting f'in sick of it too! I feel like I die a little on the inside everytime I say something dumb.

Answers:

I'm thinking you need counselling. You don't give examples of what the "dumb" things are that you say. It's possible that you need to work a bit on "personal boundaries", understanding where the stop signs and yield signs are in a relationship, things like not giving advice to people who don't ask, not pressuring people, not offering your opinions if no one asks for it -- things like that.

Also, you might want to avoid drinking. Drinking causes a loss of inhibition, which leads to the occurrence of "stupid things", so that's an easy place to start.

If you feel that you have a minor mental illness, then counselling would be the VERY BEST place to start. I've been in counselling, and it's helpful. Whether there really is something wrong, or if you simply need work through the stress and grief of losing friendships, it can really help.

Sorry you are having a rough time. Best Wishes.

I am just gonna sum it up, its not a mental illness. if it was, you wouldnt know how to even make friends. Just think before you say. and think before you do.

I love weird people!
Don't put yourself down, explain to these people who you've lost how you feel and that you can't help it. Maybe you're slightly autistic?

i don't think so man, seems like your just a little socially retarded (like micheal from The Office). its good your self aware of the issue though, don't give up.

good luck

Obviously, when you become comfortable around people you tend to get so comfortable that you say whatever comes to mind. Unfortunately, a lot of people do this. It doesn't mean anything is wrong with them it is just that they don't think of the consequences of what they might say. One way to perhaps stop losing friends is to explain clearly to them that you feel concerned about some of the things that you say. Ask they to correct you if you behave inappropriately. Also, ask them not to take it too personally, as you have identified it as a negative in your nature and would like their help and input.

I agree with Dr George, be proud of yourself, you are a rare diamond, because you speak without thinking people will only ever get the truth from you. It's beter to get the sunsconious truth from someone than have someone tell you one thing hen you hear from someone else something entirely different! What would you prefer???? I know what I would prefer. Someone like you! If someone can't handle you being straight up then that's their problem not yours. Hold your head high & just be you ok.

Sorry I know this has no relevance to your situation but I'm just putting out a warning to everyone to Beware! Jonny Kotecki who has posted a comment to your question is claiming to peoples questions that he is a DR when he is not. This account is under surveillance.

This is serious, no one should be prescribing any medication to anyone based on what they have written without first conducting a proper consultation and through examination by a qualified, registered and licensed medical practitioner. He is posing as a Dr. Beware!

This is what Jonny Kotecki has posted to someone elses question earlier. Click on his name and see his answers.

BEWARE: Jonny Kotecki (an Indian account) is claiming he is a Dr when he isn't and he is prescribing people pharmaceutical products links based on things people write.
