Why are mood stabilizers used for normal depression now?!

Question: Why are mood stabilizers used for normal depression now?
What is the real rationale behind adding a mood stabilizer (actually an antipsychotic drug like Seroquel XR or Abilify) to an antidepressant in people with unipolar depression?

Answers:

There is no real rationale.
The drug companies want more money.
It's all Big Pharma.

because a lot of depressed people can fluctuate rapidly from OK to suicidal and anti-depressants alone won't always make enough of a difference..

Because sometimes antidepressants by themselves just don't work....
