Could I have Asperger's Syndrome?!

Question: Could I have Asperger's Syndrome?
I have always felt different from most people all my life, but my new job as a cashier is making me question if I may have Aspergers. I'm a 20 year old female and have had a deep fascination for birds plants and prehistoric animals ever since I was a toddler. I never played with dolls but loved Poke'mon and Sonic (still do). I went to high school for my artistic abilities in many art forms, but I had difficulty and still do have difficulty being creative in my art. I am however amazingly good with details and love drawing animals. I hate drawing people and I hate drawing eyes because to me that piece of art is worthless and cold with them, but my teacher thought the reversal. I was never a part of any social group in high school and at college. I don't have many friends and making them is impossible because the people I talk to, if I do talk, think I'm boring because I don't party, rarely watch movies, hate gossiping about celebs, doing waste full girlie crap like hair and nails or care about fashion. I just care about my studies towards my biology major and doing meaningful work.

I was recently hired for a cashier job. By the end of the day I either want to scream or cry. When people start coming into my lane it makes me gritt my teeth and the noise of the carts wheels make me gritt even more. I can't stand people coming near me, talking to me or touching me. Then the noise of their items being shoved on my counter makes me want to start throwing it back at the customer. By this point I just want to get away from them because I feel like they are way to close to me. Then, I can't remember every thing to do and sometimes forget change, receipts or things like that. My manager said I shouldn't be doing it any more and should be use to it but I'm not. Usually by the end of the first hour into my shift, I can't tolerate all the sound going on and people approaching me. I start huffing and I try my hardest to avoid eye contact. If I do glimpse their eyes my mind goes blank and I can't think of what I was saying. People's eyes to feel like hey can see straight through me and see all that I see and know, It is really an unpleasant sensation. When I was a child I fell and scraped my face all up. I wouldn't look anyone in the eyes because they all stared at my face and I would have to make eye contact or say something. The teacher stared me striaght in the eyes and I was frozen. My teacher sent me for counseling and interrogation because they thought my parents had beaten me. Apparently I had acted like a child who had been beaten, but I just didn't know how to explain it to the teacher that I had fallen when she demanded I look her in the eye.

Back to my job now, I also see number all jumbled on the screen and sometimes can't understand people when they are speaking clear English (with no accent btw). I have to ask people what they are saying maybe two to three times or I have to guess what they are saying. I was tested for theses sorts of problems in school but I was told I have excellent hearing. Also some noises are excruciating to hear even when they don't seem to bother anyone else. The beeping of the sensory tags and computers make me want to cover my ears and hide. I tried explaing what was happening to my supervisor so that maybe I could stock shelves or organize because I really enjoy organizing, but she looked at me like I was crazy and told me no, that I need to just do my job.

A last note, I also have to sign people up for our store cards, sorta like a discount card, but I have no clue how to ask the customers to sign up. Since I can't get that my sign ups, my manager is cutting my hours. I feel like I a bad actor auditioning for something when I talk to customers. I am so exhausted after work I usually cry because I'm so frustrated over the fact that I'm the only one who feels like this at my job.

I really need to find a clinic, possibly a free mental health one, that can help me because I'm also suffering severe anxiety, depression, constant nightmares and ocd like symptoms. My closest and only friend thinks it is Asperger's but I have no insurance and little money. I live in Maryland if anyone knows a place I could go to to find help. Thank You.

Answers:

Sure, it's a very good possibility. You have all the major symptoms and many of the smaller ones too. You would need to be evaluated by a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in autism spectrum disorders. I don't know any specific clinics in Maryland, but your doctor or a school counselor should be able to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, the diagnostic evaluation is a bit pricy. You may be able to find someone who will diagnose you for a low price, but you'll need to do some research. Talk to your doctor, and contact clinics in your area to find out how much they charge for the evaluation. Worst case scenario, you put off getting the evaluation for a few years until you can afford it, and see a counselor (does your campus offer free counseling?) in the meantime.
