Why do I binge and purge when I'm drunk?!

Question: Why do I binge and purge when I'm drunk?
I have had issues with my weight for a very long time I have gone from 50 kilos to 40kilos now So I am 150 cm and weigh 40 kilos but I still feel as if Im a pig. Whenever I am sober I watch what I eat and Try not to go overboard but when I'm drunk I will eat anything and everything and then purge all night. I have had many issues with my weight and self harm but haven't self harmed in a year I'm starting to wonder if I am replacing one addiction (being self harming) which another (binging and purging and drinking) what can I do? Please don't suggest a councilor as I'm seeing one they just dont seem to be much help.

Hi Zell !

First of all, congratulations on your work on not self-harming, and also cutting down on alcohol. Cudos to you! Most likely, because you are very weight contentious, you binge and purge because binging would be uncontrolled weight gain. You want to control how fast you gain, so binging is a threat to that desire to control. You binge because you are human, that is, you get tired of dieting and food tastes great! I take it because of your success thus far, you are learning to love and accept yourself more than you used to. I hope you continue on this path of knowing that you are very special. A person self-harms because it is a way to feel some level of control in the midst of what seems like a life that you have very little control of otherwise. In short, it's a learned behavior of stress control, a way to feel in touch with oneself, and attaining a measure of self-control. Alcohol, as you say, is also a way to put aside the stresses of life for a period and enjoy your existence a little better. Well, the key to ongoing improvement is to find for you things that you enjoy doing that also let off steam, and enjoy life more , and that are more healthy for your body. Swimming, biking, hiking, any physical activity will blow off stress, give you a measure of control, keep you healthy and be fun. Try other things too. Maybe keep a diary of your feelings and adventures, How about volunteering at your local Salvation Army or some other help group for a few hours a week to give you more satisfaction. Experiment with hobbies that you might enjoy. There are tons of possibilities. The more you find these healthy outlets, the more you will find, you have even more control in your life over alcohol and other areas. As far as your diet goes, I would try to give your mind a rest by using the BMI (body mass index) as your guide to the weight that's healthy for you. Then you will have a target to get up to, and still be healthy. It is a medically based index taking into account a person's height and body frame. [You are 59 inches tall, and weigh 88 pounds.] Just double click on the website below to see where you fall on the index. Congratulations on your accomplishments to date. Take care dear!

Doesn't it seem rather obvious that you should quit drinking?
