There really is no magic number as to when and what day and what time, would that be awesome or what. Just like there is no magic pill. This is a process you are starting. Everyone reacts differently to every medication. Sometimes larger doses are needed sometimes smaller sometimes it just isn't the right medication. I have been through this and back. Have patience, try and be as positive as you possibly can be it has only been less than 2 weeks, a sprained ankle takes longer to heal than that, Cut yourself some slack. Trust me when I tell you worrying "when will I feel better or why isn't this working will just *** fuel to the fire you already have burning. I know when you are depressed you really dont have any interest in doing anything, but make yourself do something healthy you enjoy. Music always helped me I actually still have a play list on my Ipod called "bad day". Is is not a fix all but doing something beside worrying will make you feel just a little better. I not only have depression and have for a long time I am a mental health nurse with 18 years experience. Put something completely foolish on tv just to chuckle at. Call a friend you know is always good for a laugh. Depression is a stumbling block not a stop sign. Dont stop living, do your best. Sit in a quiet room breathe in through your nose hold it and blow it out of your mouth for a few minutes. Be sure to share all the information with your psychiatrist, I would give the med another two weeks and call the doc. All my best

Well, first and foremost, congratulations for being self-harmless for 2 months! (Yes, I creeped on your answers.) It's great that you sought professional help and are developing a treatment plan. Kudos!
Depression is a temporary problem. It's (hopefully) not a lifelong thing that you have to battle. Antidepressants take a month or so (2-6 weeks) to fully kick in. So definitely give the medication a chance. Treating depression won't happen overnight. It's a gradual process, so patience is key. But, keep in mind treatment varies for different people. Therapy might not work for some people. Antidepressants might not work for somem people. It's all about consulting a professional and catering your treatment plan to mold to your needs.
As far as your urges to cut, try to apply positive coping skills. I'm sure you're aware of existing alternatives to cutting (exercise, listening to music, journaling, etc.) but are you actually putting them to use? My counselor actually introduced me to an alternative to cutting: the rubber band method. Whenever you feel the urge to cut, you snap a rubber band on your wrist. Yes, technically, it's self-harm, but she told me it was a less harmful substitute for cutting.
And, by all means, hang in there. I know it's tough, and sometimes you feel like you're struggling in a broken world, but it's not a solo battle unless you make it one.
And feel free to email me if you just need to talk or vent. :)

Hi Bob
Really sorry to hear you were depressed that long before you were given any medication. Unfortunately some meds can take about that time to start working. I'm sorry to hear your anxiety is making you feel you want to self harm, hopefully your meds will kick in soon or if you are still feeling so anxious after another week i think you should go back to your gp....i have been through the same as yourself and sometimes changing meds to find the right one is the only answer. try and keep thoughts good x

They should be working good soon but if they don't I would tell the doctor... They really do help slot so if they aren't it could just be the wrong kind for you. Just hang in there it will get better I promise! :D

have faith, you will get better :) and if dont see some results, go to some other doc...
