My mom won't let me get help for my trichotillomania?!

Question: My mom won't let me get help for my trichotillomania?
please help me :( Sorry it's long.. please help

Let me start off by saying i'm a 13 year old girl. In December 2009 I began to pull out my eyebrows. I had no idea what I was doing or why I was doing it- all I knew was that it felt good. Then I looked in the mirror and saw my eyebrows were basically GONE. I covered them up with my bangs. My mom eventually found out, and she started yelling at me. I didn't know why I pulled out my hair and I cried and I told her I didn't know why I did it. She still yelled at me and she took away my stuff because she thought I was doing it to look like a supermodel or a gangster girl. I had to draw them on for a few months in my 7th grade year. It was horrible- I was bullied and I contemplated suicide a few times because of it.

During the summer they grew back beautifully. I had a great summer and I didn't pull at all. Then right around December 2010 I began to pull AGAIN. My eyebrows were gone once again, and I proceeded to get yelled at. I began to cut myself and contemplate suicide because of it- I felt horrible. People were making fun of me once again. I finally did some research and found something like just what I had- trichotillomania.

My mom knew I cut myself and she thinks I did for the attention. I finally had the guts to talk to her again and when I told her about trichotillomania and how I needed help, she told me that I actually DESERVED to be bullied because of it, that it was my fault, I was stupid, etc. I was having a breakdown and I hurt myself even more. I try asking her for help all the time and she always says that "it's all in my head" and i'm doing it for the attention.

I don't know what to do anymore. I'm so upset and I can't stand living like this anymore. My mom doesn't believe me and I feel so ugly, it's horrible.. PLEASE HELP!! :'(

Answers:

talk to the school counselor. Possibly they'll get you help, and get therapy. Don't let what you're parents tell you hurt you. My parents are worthless, but I don't let them get me down(however, they abuse my sister, and I feel horrible when they hurt her, like I couldn't protect her, and have attempted suicide several times because of it, if you want help in the suicidal part, I'll try my best to help you out of those thoughts if you email me at zc00gii(at)thefacepalm(dot)net) Don't let this get you down. Talk to a therapist, they'll may put you on antidepressants or something. This is NOT your fault. And you do NOT deserve to be yelled at by your parents, or being bullied.

Talk to your guidance counselor at school. Remember that you are not the only one who has that condition. Don't let anyone bring you down. Maybe your counselor could talk to your mother and let her know you need to be seen by a doc.

talk to your school guidance counselor

lol thats a lot of words

A previous answer follows, modified for you: It usually occurs as a result of anxiety, or stress, and may be considered as a type of coping, or avoiding mechanism. View http://your-mental-health.weebly.com/1.html about OCD, anxiety, and stress, then pages f, i, and m; (self harm/cutting; see pages 1, & a) see the SJW, & HYPERICUM websites on page b about St. John's Wort, (preferably use a German variety; local ones may vary in efficacy - take with a meal; it usually takes at least 2, and up to 6 weeks, to begin reaching maximum effectiveness) which is believed to act by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitters; serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, moderately, rather than selectively giving the serotonin levels of the brain a large boost, as with antidepressants. Jarsin, Perika, and Kira brands have been recommended. S.J.W. may reduce your vitamin D3 levels; most people are deficient in it. See http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/12/16/my-one-hour-vitamin-d-lecture-to-clear-up-all-your-confusion-on-this-vital-nutrient.aspx Check out: http://www.foodforthebrain.org/content.a… and Google: "anxiety; 5-htp" articles. Also consider trying inositol - (it's actually one of the B group vitamins, so you could also combine it with the wort, and possibly a low dosage of 5-htp [no more than 50mg daily] http://westsuffolkpsych.homestead.com/in… ) Use a form of occupational therapy, to keep your mind busy. Another suggestion, for when you catch yourself doing this. Carry a wide rubber band in your pocket: put it on your wrist; stretch, and release, as a means of reinforcing it, and speeding up the process, re-pocketing it afterwards, but I regard this as being purely optional. A support group is at: http://anxiety.wegohealth.com/ocd-support-group/trichotillomania/comments.html and also try: http://dailystrength.org

Cut your hair very short, and wear a wig for a while; then you would only be pulling the wig, while your hair regrows, and you unlearn the habit. Trichotillomania is a habit, which can be unlearned, preferably by replacing it with another, such as worry beads, or a stress ball, EFT*, etc. This may take 30 - 40 repetitions, to establish. Wear a bandanna to sleep, and put band aids on your finger & thumb. Practice a relaxation method, daily, and when needed, such as http://www.drcoxconsulting.com/managing-… or http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/mindbody… or http://www.wikihow.com/Meditate Yoga Nidra, (a series of easy mental exercises only; no flexibility required) on page L, at Weebly. Tai Chi, regular yoga, or Qi Gong, suits others better. Give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. It is free via the searchbar at www.mercola.com "EFT" & "EFT therapists" - There is a version for use in public places, (if you want to, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples, but you would then be restricted to subvocalising: saying it to yourself in your mind: "Even though I pull my hair/eyelashes out, I deeply and completely accept myself". The acupressure technique can also be used to replace the hair pulling, (and there is a variation for use in public places, for which you can reasonably claim to have a headache) so give it a good tryout. Professional EFT is always preferable. Try to find a therapist who uses Habit Reversal Training. Google: "Clinical psychologists; (your city); (your state)" Hypnosis is merely a heightened state of suggestibility, in which you are better able to communicate with your subconscious mind. 85% of people are suggestible to some degree; 15% - 20% highly so, and 15% - 20% aren't much at all, so you could either preferably seek professional hypnotherapy, or, if not an option, hypnosisdownloads.com has
some via their searchbar about hair or eyelash pulling, and controlling impulses.

Your mom...yikes...I don't even...

Anyways, I noticed this question and had to comment on it, as I had it at one point too. Guidance counselor is the best thing for you, because you're always going to school, and they can and most likely will tell your mother to get help. If she still refuses, I'd try a child neglect line...not helping a kid when they're in your situation is just damn vile. Especially if you're being bullied and she says it's YOUR fault. That's effing screwed up.
