My friend was diagnosed brain dead?!

Question: My friend was diagnosed brain dead?
Can brain dead be mistaken for a coma? How many incidents are there that a "miracle" happens?

Answers:

I am so sorry to hear that this is happening in your life right now. When I was 18, a friend of mine was in an accident and was declared brain dead as well. Unfortunately, even though you see it on TV and in movies a lot, incidences where people are declared brain dead but are later able to recover to a point where they become conscious again virtually never happen. It just isn't reality, not with the kind of advanced medical technology we have today. We can put electrodes on a person's skull and monitor their brain activity, we can see for ourselves whether they have any upper level functioning or not.

Back in the day it was more or less a guess, but we don't have to guess anymore, we know. If your friend has been declared brain dead, it is because there is NO upper level cortical activity or activity in the brain stem. The brain has died, and because the brain is the seat of all functions of the body, it means that by extension the body is also dead. In many states, brain death is legal death.

Just because your friend is on life support doesn't mean they're alive anymore... I am so sorry to have to say that, but it's the truth. Whoever your friend was, the person you knew before, is gone. That part of their body, the part that you may or may not believe is their "soul", has moved on. You should not hold on to the belief that your friend is going to miraculously come out of a coma and be with you again... you have to start coming to terms with the fact that your friend, your loved one, is gone.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Good luck.

They have machines that can test if there is brain activity. There is a slight chance he could come out of it still, but it is not likely. Pray .
You have the right to talk to the doctors or family and ask questions.

I'm really sorry to hear this, but chances are your friend wont just miraculously pull out of it. If there is too much damage to the brain, it call no longer function properly.
