Is it normal to be anxious and scared when you first start talking with a therap!

Question: Is it normal to be anxious and scared when you first start talking with a therapist?
ive always been kind of a loner, preferring to keep to myself, when i first started talking with my therapist i was so anxious, and scared that something bad would happen if i told them the truth; so at first i wasnt 100% honest (i opened up bit by bit, first i mentioned the cutting and depression and anxiety, then i mentioned my drug use, then i mentioned that i had suicidal thoughts), but after a few appointments i was. now im still a bit anxious when talking with them, but now im not afraid that something bad will happen. ive been seeing them every other week since november and still its not easy to talk about my issues.

Answers:

Yes it's absolutely normal. I mean think about it: you're expected to talk to a complete stranger about very personal details of your life and even your inner thoughts. And with therapists you often feel that they are in some position where they could cause you trouble. It takes a while to learn to trust someone enough to talk about things and maybe with some very personal issues you might never be entirely comfortable talking about it to someone else.

But it's great that you do and it seems to help you and it seems like you are slowly building up that trust, so keep going with that.

It is absolutely normal being anxious talking about deep feelings, etc. As you develop trust with your therapist those anxious feelings will lessen. Being alive is anxiety producing! Hang in there and stay open and honest.

I get horny talking to mine
