What if a therapist finds out that you're self harming?!

Question: What if a therapist finds out that you're self harming?
I'm a 15 year old girl. Self harming as in cutting, not suicidal. I'm already seeing a therapist, I just don't know what she'll do if I tell her I'm self harming. She knows I've done it before, but not that I currently am. What will she do? Will she tell me mum? My mum knows I've done it before, and my mum's crazy. She once found band aids in the bathroom and assumed I was cutting, and stripped me down butt-naked to look for the cuts. My mum cannot find out again.

Answers:

Legally your therapist cannot tell your mother about your SI. What's said in therapy is to be kept confidential and private. Your mother will not find out unless you choose to tell her.

As for what your therapist will do, that depends upon her as an individual. She'll most likely want to do some kind of chain analysis to figure out what triggered the relapse and what you can do to prevent it in the future.

Best of luck.

Well, since your a minor, your therapist has the option of telling your mother. However, if your therapist is a reasonable woman, and if you tell her that you don't want your mother to find out (mentioning the band aid episode as evidence of the reason), she probably will at least give you time to mentally prepare yourself for your mother's reaction. Plus, she may think that telling your mother may be a step backwards in your sessions because your trust in your therapist would be damaged.

Therapists are trained to keep STRICT confidentiality. They break it only when they believe your life is in danger and the parent must be informed.

tell therapist you still cut, everyone cuts now, its the fashion

Tell her. Don't worry about if someone will find out. It is for your safety. But law does allow her to if it is a serious threat to your or someone else's health. Good Luck!
