Do I listen to my psychiatrist or to myself?!

Question: Do I listen to my psychiatrist or to myself?
I'm prescribed 600mg quetiapine after 2 episodes of illness with 3 hospitalisations (I am Schizoaffective)
I got out of the hospital a month ago
Psychiatrist thinks I am still struggling with delusional beliefs but I don't agree.
She wants me upped to 700mg.
I've been on this drug just over a year and have only in the last few months gotten into the best routine with the whole tiredness and weight gain side effects.
Her and my CPN are dead sure they want me to go up
I don't want to though...
Who do I listen to and why?

This is a hard one for you, I'm Bipolar 1 and have experienced the same thing. I don't ever know wheter to trust my gut instinct or mt Psyc. Is the problem taking the meds and the side effects? I've struggled for years with meds trying to find the right one then my PDoc retired and I got a new Psyc and she is amazing, told me there was no reason to suffer with side effects from drugs and it was a case of finding one that didn't do this to me. My combination now is Gabapentin (fab mood stabliser for me, no side effects) haloperidol for mania and amytriptaline for depression. All giving no side effects. Have you tried taking them at night? I take my haloperidol at night as it makes me sleepy and this combats this.

Or is the problem that you think you're right and they're wrong? You are very entitled to think this, it's your body thats being affected by this all but please please do remember how these things take hold of us and cloud our judgement. How about a compromise, you'll up the dose for 4 weeks and if you still feel the same way and are sure that you are feeling OK, they'll reconsider the dose?

Once you're sure you're stable talk to them about having a med review to see if there's anything else you can take that makes you feel OK without the hellish side effects, I've been there and can see exactly where you're coming from, it's not nice and as my Psyc says, really unnessecary to stuggle with side effects.

I wish you all the very best with this, it's a very hard road to travell but you're not alone. Please take care of yourself, keep your chin up and the very best of luck xx

psychiatrist's are there to help you, but its a two way thing you must listen to him and heeds his advise and do your part and act on what he or she has to say, you will get there in the end its a slow process I know, because I have been down that road myself and made a full recovery. Get well soon.

From experience.

First, take all of your resources and go back to school. Study medicine and get a degree in Mental health. After that you will be best able to answer your question, rather than "second guessing" someone who has spent years studying. It doesn't mean they are smarter than anyone else but it certainly means they are more qualified to make these decisions than you are. Best wishes

Your psychiatrist. At the end of the day, she is the one with the credentials and the degrees, so she is more qualified to judge on what would be the best for you.

you cant disagree with a psycho, schizophrenics always think theres nothing wrong with them when there is

Why bother going to a doctor, and then dis-believe what they say? What a waste of money.

Sometimes it is a combination of both listening to yourself, and your instincts, and then see if the persons 'helping ' you are actually helping you. I have seen doctors say someone who is thinking very clearly, but not in agreement with THEM, say someone is delusional. I don't know what thoughts they think you have are delusional. If you are just disagreeing with them, then that doesn't make you delusional.
Some doctors can be real jerks about all this .
If that isn't the case with you and your thoughts are really delusional, then it might be more difficult for you to weigh those thoughts with so called 'reality'.
I always question doctors who say a patient is delusional, because it so often means the patient doesn't agree with the doctor. That doesn't make someone delusional.
Regardless, if you don't cannot believe, or work with this doctor and CPN, then find someone you can work with and that you can build up some trust with so you are not always afraid of wht they are recommending.
Anyone sane would be greatly concerned with psychiatric medications, and that isn't 'delusional' , it is fact, and common sense.
I believe doctors have lost their abilities to heal, common sense, and the case could be made they are the most delusional of all.
my opinion, i wish you the very best
Find doctors and learn more about what it takes to heal the body. Doctors don't know that.
