Why People Use Self-Injury?!

Question: Why People Use Self-Injury?
I used to be a cutter, but now I'm way over 4 months clean(: .(I turned to it because I was bullied & hurt badly.) I've also been doing research on the topic, but I don't fully undersand why people turn to self-injury. But that all stopped. My priority now is to help people who are cutters, stop cutting. So my question right now is why do people use self-injury? If you have ever done it, why?
My former best friend is or was a cutter, I wouldn't know anymore, I haven't talked to him in at least 6 months.... He was depressed and did drugs and drank and cut and was suicidal, I had enough of it, I didn't want to see him like that anymore... So I turned away and made a new path. I needed to get better, I still do-- just cause I stopped cutting doesn't mean I'm not depressed anymore.. Honestly, I don't know weather I am or not.
For all those people who still use self injury........................IT ISN'T WORTH IT.
Think of everyone who loves & cares for you, think of all your friends. Don't think of pain or being stressed or getting hurt. If you have ever been hurt, and cut just to see if the person who hurt you cares.... Chances are they don't-- so please don't cut anymore :'(
Self-injury can kill you, it is very very very very very dangerous... ((I neer used a knife, I burned with an eraser...)) Is an eraser still the same as a knife? YES. It does the same ammount of damage.
Weather you use an eraser, knife, razor blade, bobby-pin, stick or anything-- it is equivalent to a knife!!!!! Just because it may not be a blade, doesn't make it any different.
JUST REMEMBER THIS............. IN LIFE, YOU ARE NEVER ALONE! Though it may feel like it, you're not.

I'm proud of you for going 4 months without cutting, that takes a lot of strength :) I was totally expecting this to be the "you shud not cut because its gros and no one lieks emo ppl" type of question, so I was pleasently suprised.

I started cutting when I was 13, because my best friend did it and she told me it helped her. I was young and stupid and I thought my best friend was cool and knew all the answers. For her it was just a phase and she stopped doing it, but for me it became an addiction. Every time I was depressed I'd reach for a knife or a razor to cut myself. It seems so stupid because once you start doing it you can't stop, even if you know how ridiculous it is. Cutting yourself makes your body release endorphins, so it can make you feel ever-so-slightly happier when you're really really down. Its also effective in releasing stress, I'd feel like I just hate everybody and everything in the whole world, but I could never hurt another person, so I'd hurt myself instead. It felt so good, so, so, relieving to press razor blade as hard as I could against my skin and see blood. And other times, when I was overwhelmed with guilt, I felt like I had to hurt myself because I deserved it. And when I cut I'd feel a sence of justification, like, okay I hurt someone but it's alright because I cut myself for it.

Anyway, your story is interesting and more people need to be aware that self injury is a real problem and not just something kids do to be "emo". Everyone has their own reasons for cutting, there's no one reason people cut. So thanks a lot for your insightful question :) And btw I'm 6 months clean now so yay me.

Physical pain can get your thoughts off of psychological pain. Most people do it to distract themselves from their problems.

In my opinion, cutting is worth it in my person situation.g

Its not a distraction from problems. Cutting releases endorphines. Endorphines are what is released when you are happy so when someone cuts, they are naturally released so it can "counter act" the pain. People become addicted to this endorphine release that they continue cutting. Its not so much the actual cutting as they don't know how else to get this rush of good feelings anywhere else.
