How long do antidepressants start to really work?!

Question: How long do antidepressants start to really work?
ive been on 20 mg of celexa for about 2 weeks and so far it hasnt really helped, its just made me drowsy so i often dont feel like im getting enough sleep even if i get 12 hours of sleep each night, and i was told i might need the dosage to be increased and i already have another appointment with the person that prescribed it to me

Answers:

It is rare that you'll feel direct mood effects any sooner than about a month. There's a wide range depending on the antidepressant, but even the quickest acting ones usually have a lag of 2-4 weeks. You'll, of course, feel the side effects almost immediately (isn't that just peachy?), but hang in there; they tend to fall off fairly soon, and may not bother you at all before long (but always, always report exactly what they are to your doctor, and if a side-effect becomes too much to deal with, doesn't get better over a reasonable period of time, and keeps you from functioning adequately, ask to change your medication--there's always a little trade-off, but there are alternatives). Celexa should start kicking in at about 4 weeks (but it can take longer, and the effect will probably be gradual). Patience pays off in the end, so just stick with it. It's good that you already have another appointment scheduled; antidepressants usually need some dosage tweaking before you and your doctor hit the sweet spot; just keep him/her informed and hopefully you'll get the results you're looking for. With the right diagnosis and medication, there's a world of difference in how much better you can feel.

Celexa takes longer then most antidepressants to work. Sometimes it will take up to a month to come into effect, but hang in there Celexa is a very, very good medication.

I've been on 20mg celexa for a year.

Well, it ranges for every med, dosage, and person. for me when i went on my first anti-depressant it was right away but it could take up to months.

Personal Experience

Well, it can take a looooong time, like eight weeks, so hang in there, and don't increase the dosage just yet, wait a little while, OK?

Good luck!... :-D

You will feel the effect after one month
