What happens if you just stop taking Paxil cold turkey?!

Question: What happens if you just stop taking Paxil cold turkey?
Why's it dangerous? I Have been on it for nearly a year, and it REALLY HELPED at first! But now I actually feel better when I miss a dose (this has only happened a couple of times)

Answers:

It is important that you ask your doctor to help you wean down from this medication. Very serious side effects could possibly occur, those even leading up to an unplanned need for hospitalization.

It is not safe to take on this endeavor by yourself. The doctor who prescribed this medication needs to be contacted before you decide to eliminate that medication from your regime.

Actually stopping "cold turkey" can have some immediate negative impact on your overall health. This medication needs to be "tapered" down. When you say you feel better when you miss a dose, I think you are convincing yourself (in a very unscientific way) that you actually feel better. Please talk to your doctor. He/She can explain the danger of stopping the medication. This person can also explain the phenomenon that you describe of feeling better when you miss a dose. There may be some need to titrate the dosage that you are currently being prescribed but leave that up to a professional to decide.

I was never on Paxil, but I was on Lexapro. At one point, I decided I no longer wanted to take my medication and stopped cold turkey, which was a big mistake.

Abruptly stopping these meds can cause a condition called SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome. First come the brain shocks - the feeling of being zapped in your brain, like touching something during winter and getting a shock off it. These continued and got worse, until I had a migraine. The migraine caused nausea and vomiting and the brain shocks continued. I finally started taking the meds again and felt much better.

You have to be slowly weaned off these types of drugs. I started by cutting the dose in half and took the half dose everyday for 2-3 weeks. Then I took half a dose every other day for 2-3 weeks. You have to go slowly with this or else it is miserable.

Experience

You shouldn't quit medication without the OK from your doctor.

Quitting cold turkey may not produce any immediate effects, but it may have subtle negative effects later on. Your body is used to having a regular dose and all of a sudden it stops.

Brain chemistry is really complicated and involved: talk to your doctor about quitting, they will most likely wean you off of it little by little.

it just is dangerous apart from the fact your original symptoms are most likely to reappear and could even be worse if you went cold turkey

you probably feel better because your brain chemistry would have been altered whilst taking the drug
please talk to your dr and go about this sensibly

best wishes

do not go cold turkey go to your doctor and explain you do not need the paxil anymore.and he will slowly wean you off the medication and watch to see if your symptems return withjout the meds
