Why won't she help herself?!

Question: Why won't she help herself?
Why won't she help herself?
I have a friend who is 55 years old, she is about 80 pounds over weight, she has diabetes, asthma, and hypertension.
I think she has had most of these problems from a young age....like in her 30's.
She absolutely refuses to do anything about it.
She will NOT exercise and she eats sweets and pop.

We have tried telling her that if she exercised and ate better she would not have all these health problems. I am sure her doctors have told her the same.
But it does no good. She will not do it.

We work together and our jobs are very sedentary (we sit at desks all day) she can sit for hours in the exact same position without moving.
I try to get her to get up every hour to stretch, Nope.
I try to get her to walk at lunch time Nope.
I have actually stopped asking her.

Why won't she help herself get well?

Thanks!

Answers:

Have you tried asking her? What does she say? Maybe she's apathetic, maybe she doesn't want help or to get well and fit. Maybe she thinks she's not good enough to deserve to get well? Just be there for her, your not her doctor and your not responsible for her health just support her so she can make healthy decisions for herself.

Sounds like you are a good friend so just carry on with that.

Maybe because she thinks that she doesn't need help. Maybe she thinks it's okay. Or maybe she has tried in the past, but gave up because she thought it wasn't helping any. Maybe she is just simply too lazy to work out and try to eat healthier. Or...maybe she just feels like nothing will help and that she's close to dying anyway and that it doesn't matter? Theses might be some of the things that may be running through her head.

Most people don't want to face the fact of their own mortality.. and especially if they're doing something that could make their life end sooner. You can't force her to exercise or want to live a healthy life you can only try to help her see things differently

She might be suffereing from depression..

I don't really know =( sorry. Just don't give up on asking her.
